Inspirational figures

I'm inspired by people like Richard Feynman, who had a child's sense of wonder about the universe and was very honest about the limits of our scientific knowledge.

Another inspiration of mine is mythological, not incarnate: Quan Yin, the thousand-armed bodhisattva, also known as the Goddess of Compassion. Her tale made me cry with the strength of emotion it produced in me on reading it.

I'm inspired by many people. Great thinkers, like Newton, Voltaire, and Marx, then there's always the people who've always made space fun and interesting like Sagan, Nye, Feynman, the list goes on. I'm especially inspired by the Astronauts and Cosmonauts themselves, for the things they've done and what it took to get them there. That's what I hope to do one day.

Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Not so much inspiration as admiration. He was a truly great leader.

Giving to the go-ahead for the D-day landing was especially gut wrenching...

In the hours before D-Day was to begin, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, visited with the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division to bolster their morale. As he moved amongst the troops, Eisenhower’s heart was heavy; he knew a 70% casualty rate was possible for the men standing before him. At 11:00 pm, Eisenhower stood on the roof of the nearby headquarters and saluted each plane as it took off en route to France. As these brave men soared past him, tears filled Eisenhower’s eyes. “I’ve done all I can,†he had told them. “Now it is up to you.â€Â

A List, in no particular order:

1. Nikola Tesla. Let others use his patents for free and has been reported to have only slept for 2 hours, although taking small naps.

2. Richard Feynman. Helped me understand heat and the absence of it and inspires me to come up with simple explanations for complex things.

3. Winston Churchill. Orated some of the greatest speeches of all time and inspired the British and possibly American people while he was depressed. Shows me that even if I do get in a depressed or sad state I can still get s*** done.

4. George Carlin. One of the main reasons I became an Atheist and makes me think differently than most people do.

5. Carl Sagan. Put an intense love for space in me and also another reason why I became an Atheist.
