Risk Factors in Career: Scale of 1 to 10, shoddy to pristine parts

Recommended Posts

This is an old post that I made on 10th June 2013, 00:53.

I have this idea, perhaps this would be fun in career mode, but it's too lengthy for a single post here--I might develop it into a blog entry. But the rough cut is this--really cheap parts...they would look like the same parts, i.e. "long fuel tank", but it looks really shoddy and dilapidated (i.e you can see rust, or paint peeling, or even actual 3D mesh parts peeling away from the structure) and the reliability and robustness would be less than its 'normal priced' versions. This would be hilarious--it would make some launches really scary, but the feeling of relief in reaching orbit or some other place with cheap items (RISK due to lack of funds!) would be interesting and memorable...plus the screenshots would look hilarious!

This is a type of development direction that puts the "kerbal" back into Kerbal.

Now, considering career is here, I was hoping that this kind of thing could be implemented. I really think it would add an interesting twist to how someone would run a space program. Will the person want to select dilapidated parts just to be on the cheap and thus save some roots, but at the same time, adding more risk to the missions? Or will he keep buying pristine parts, if only to ensure that the launches go near-perfect? Really interested in feedback from Squad about this.

IIRC, Squad's said that nothing involving random failure will ever come to KSP -- failures should be solely due to decisions you made, not because the random number generator didn't like you.

You will most likely not get any at all. SQUAD has already said, as cpast said before me, that they will never have a random failure element. Maybe a mod will eventually be created, but don't really count on that, either.

As has been said already, Squad have in the past mentioned that they do not want the game to punish players for things they can't control. There are plenty of failures that come about due to imperfect craft design already anyway, without them making the parts have internal failure schemes. :)

Anyhow, as you may or may not be aware, this is one of the many items on the [thread=36863]What Not to Suggest List[/thread]. As such... we'll have to close this one. Sorry.
