I wanted to know the difference between Steam vs. KSP Store players, so I made this poll. If you want to explain why you chose what, then that's very welcome.

EDIT: Also why does it post the thread before the poll is created?

I just use steam because it updates without me touching anything. And no bottlenecks from all the people hopping onto the store.

I originally had it on the store, but when they released it on steam i switched it over to there.

I play the KSP Store, Mostly because it gives me more control over where I put my game, and how many I have (I know you can have multiple copies via steam) It also makes modding quick and easy.

Its literally exactly the same, you just have to copy and paste.

i bought it thru steam but play it thrue the launcher, as to shut off 64 bit. i have multiple instances of game, (one for mods, one "'nilla") the 'nilla save is thru steam. while my mod build is in a separate locations as to avoid updates. i love the fact that squad lets us do this :)

I bought it through 3rd party (Humble Bundle), got it on the Steam, but never use that bloatware to run the game - got a direct shortcut for that.

So... I guess there is no option in the survey that would work for me.

How is Steam bloatware? Seriously?

I bought it from the store, mostly because that's what came up when I googled it after watching KurtJMac's video.

Though I'm glad I did now, as it's far easier to maintain multiple installs and run them all from batch files (though I hear you can just copy your ksp directory somewhere else and steam will not ever know, and KSP will run fine)

Bought through store, play offline.

I made the mistake of buying the Left4Dead bundle for $70 when L4D came out, and the loss of my internet meant that I could not play offline. "Offline" mode requires an internet connection to established with steam servers, but just shows you as "offline". This is an issue when steam cannot connect to steam servers for a period of 72 hours, and according to a steam tech guy, it wont be changed. This was YEARS ago. I dont want to be dependent on an active internet connection to play an offline game.

Steam, great concept for multi-player only games. Just not my cup of tea when I don't want to fly in the iCloud 24x7.

That's only with DRM enabled Steam games. KSP is DRM free and will play from anywhere on the HDD. I keep my Steam KSP copy free of mods, nor do I even play it from Steam; instead I play it from copies stashed around the HDD. If I overmod or tweak something I shouldn't have, it's as easy as copy/paste to get a fresh, clean, KSP install. I do this on both Windows and Linux. It actually makes me wonder how the KSP Steam stats are off because of mods and a lot of us not running it through Steam to give statistics of use.

Bought through the store, for a few reasons:

1. Steam is always-online, which would mean I wouldn't be able to play KSP when the internet is out. My poop connection makes that problematic.

2. Modding is easier--you have to dig a bit for the right files in Steam.

3. I don't have to get rid of my old versions--nice if you want to wrap up a save after a save-breaking update hits, plus nostalgia.

Generally, I use Steam for games I can't get anywhere else (Rise Of Nations, TF2, Etc). Otherwise, the always-online thing just isn't worth it.

I bought it through the KSP store as I dislike Steam's requirements of an active internet connection to do anything with any game you've acquired through it. I don't take my internet connection for granted.

Steam does have an offline mode which I have used extensively without issue. Internet connection is only really needed for steam to acquire the game, install and update. Other than that you can run it offline as much as you like.

I recommend steam highly to anyone with access to decent internet once in a while (unless you have low download limits!). Even that can be circumnavigated with backup installs and just activating/updating online.

Well you can choose where to put the game for Steam too... Modding is just as easy. There is virtually no difference in anything, and other than being a Steam-o-phobic there's no reason not to have it on Steam.

There seems to be some confusion over Steam online requirements.

For KSP,you do not have to start up steam to play it, you simply need to make a shortcut directly from the .exe or use the launcher. And Most other steam games will run in offline mode just fine.

You know what, I just tried to boot steam to see if it felt like working today, and sure enough:

Typical Steam... The moment you step up to defend it...
