Fuel Tank Tweakables

Recommended Posts

I just had a small idea regarding fuel tank tweakables; I know one of the things that has prevented LF-only NERVA's from being stock was the lack of fuel tanks, and I'm sure all you spaceplane builders wish there were more than one LF-only cylindrical tank. Previously this has required duplicate tanks or a plugin like B9 uses.

I would suggest that instead of additional variants, fuel tank contents should be a function of the fill level tweakables. If, for example, you reduce the level of oxidizer in a tank, it would add available empty space to the fuel side of the slider, which you could then fill with LF. using this space would of course remove the empty space from the oxidizer side.

EXAMPLE TANK

Liquid Fuel

[lllllllllllllllllllllllll]

Oxidizer

[lllllllllllllllllllllllll]

Liquid Fuel

[lllllllllllllllllllllllll ]

Oxidizer

[lllllllllllllll ]

Liquid Fuel

[lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll]

Oxidizer

[lllllllllllllll]

Does that make any sense?

I don't think it's realistic, but gameplay wise it's not a bad idea. Spaceplanes could need that kind of tweaking. And I imagine tbis being easyer to work with than tweakables. But a "default fuel setup" button is a must.

I would rly like the devs to give some basic info on theire plans regarding that topic... Somebody correct me if I'm talking nonsense, but tweakables for fuel or variants of tanks (or whatever the devs like best) should not be that hard to implement. It rather seems to be a design issue.

I absolutly understand and agree that they don't announce content that may not be possible to implement, but this is most likely not a feature from that category. I would rly like to know if there already are plans on how this will or won't happen. Or if it is still a good idea to discuss the different options.

Btw this suggestion may be the most flexible and caters most people's needs

If cannot say it is really necessary, but it sound logic to me that Kerbun Engineering could resize engine tank like that.

So if "too much parts" became a thing I wouldn't mind having to tweak this way.

But if this is the way to get NERVA LF-only, I'm all for it.

It could get meaninglessly complex though. Sometime you gotta do simple.

To do a proper ssto space plane you do need LF-only tsnks, the more options you have the better. It's not impossible to do it with the current parts but the balancing can be tricky. Fuel is used during the flight and the com shifts. If you want to be efficient (use full tanks only) you are pretty limited by the parts that can hold LF-only. Those usually have to be somewhere near the com. Such a feature can be handy and would allow more designs.

NERVA's using the fuel they are supposed to use is nice, too

couldn't this be done simply with a third slider for fuel ratio?:

LF: -[â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– ]+

OX: -[â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â– ____]+

Ratio: OX[____â–²________]LF

I was going to suggest the same thing. To make it more realistic, I would say you should only be able to set the ratio in the VAB/SPH. You could also make this type of tank a more advanced part that has to be unlocked through the tech tree. This would be immensely helpful for the design of nice-looking and functional SSTO's.
