Kerbal Kulture

all the drones we see work singlemindedly towards the exploration of space, as that is the will of the hive queen. She is a massive wormlike creature living deep below ksc

She is the kraken :blush::blush::blush: she smites the kerbals that don't follow her demands

I think OP isnt looking for fanfiction, so much as "Fanon", similar to the thread about kerbal genders but about culture instead.

I like reading this kind of stuff so if OP would kindly clarify his intention for Vanamonde, that would be cool. I'd like to see how others imagine the culture of our beloved green astronauts.

EDIT: R.I.P. this thread, gone from general discussion.

There's quite a lot of material to condense into a single post, so (if you'll excuse the plug), its probably easiest to follow the First Flight link in my signature. It's definitely fan fiction, but if you skip over the spaceflight chapters, there's stuff in there about kerbal government, history, societal organisation, snacks, sports, hobbies, and architecture. :)

Edit: Not to mention family life and why all in-game kerbals have the same surname.

Quote from the thread:

Can't help but agree. You've put an amazing amount of thought into giving Kerbals a unique culture.

If you don't have time or inclination to read the whole thing, Echoes of Time, is probably the key chapter. It's all on my forum blog too, if you want to read it without added comments.

From today's DevNotes:

Rogelio (Roger): I’ve been modeling some of the interiors of the upgradable buildings. It is funny to imagine the places where Kerbals work and live. First of all, I had to understand how the Kerbals are, what do they like to do, how they build and arrange things and how they live. Then I got to the modeling and texturing process. The art style is based on the Kerbal lifestyle. We’re almost done with the building production, but we’re making some slight modifications to make them look better. I’m looking forward to see how they work in-game.

It would be interesting to know what Roger has imagined :-)

I tend to imagine they are a civilisation not that unlike ours, except the whole planet has one overall government, somewhere in between a federal government, and the united nations. There is a ceremonial monarchy in there somewhere. Smaller, country governments do exist, but they are less important.

I like to imagine them a very peaceful, yet adventures people. They have schools, and whatever, yet a fair amount of freedom to play around. Though there are still rules they must follow.

I like to imagine the second syllable of the name is what links families, rather than the last name.

The major difference is in the needs of their stature- everything is shaped for a kerbal . Also, they like hexagons for some reason.

My some of my fanworks, including the main two are in my sig. The ones on either end touch on an idea of kerbal society a little.

Movenated to Fanworks :)

Also, I see Kerbals as being rather innocent and childlike, so I see their Kulture being based on simple things such as having fun, eating snacks and feeding their inexhaustible childlike wonder at the world and of space :)

In my opinion, the fact that their creations don't always stay in space is the reason that none of their buildings are on the surface: they're all underground due to the common fear of rockets crashing into them. Only a select few structures (the part shop in one of the recent update cinematics, as well as all buildings of the KSC) are aboveground.

In other worlds, kerbals are just like the late 50s early 60s United States citizen, but a little smarter. (The kerbals use nuclear energy to make fireworks stead of bombs).

Judging by the exploitation of the latest update allowing destructible buildings, I can't entirely agree with you. :P

I don't think of them as warlike or lusting for conquest either though; they are merely united by an inexhaustible love of aerospace. It makes me wonder why they would be naturally inclined to invent rockets before deployable ladders.

It's not entirely crazy for two reasons. First, deployable ladders like we see in KSP require a fair amount of engineering expertise that wouldn't really be needed before spaceflight. Second, humans landed on the moon before putting wheels on luggage.

Of course, this doesn't justify the lack of fixed rungs in early spacecraft...
