Help with premature parachute ejection issues

Recommended Posts

Every time i launch my rocket my parachute ejects way too soon and up side down...any suggestions please?

Thank you

As you get older this will be less of a problem. When you are really old, it may not be able to eject at all.

For the small stuff, add the parachute first ... they seem to automatically end up in stage 0, but they don't bump other stuff down, so if you've already added something else, bad things can happen.

Of course, if you're over 23km when you stage to it, the chutes won't open, and you could always just add a stage and move stuff.

Kind of an awkward problem to have. (Ejectile dysfunction? :P)

In all seriousness, though, everyone here is right, make sure the parachute is on the correct (usually the last/top) stage. Also keep in mind that parachutes don't eject until 23km altitude or below, and they don't fully inflate until 500m above the surface.

Also important: Please ensure you are using the correct type of parachute; either the Mk16, the Mk16-XL, or the Mk2-R. The Mk25 is a drogue, and it's useless for actually landing, and only good for slowing things down.

You're staging the engine and parachute at the same time. Hover the mouse over your staging stack - the little thing in the lower right (in the VAB, lower left on the launchpad) - click the little + button, drag the engine down to stage 0 so that it's not in the same stage as the parachute. Then, when you hit spacebar you will only activate the engine. Once your rocket is spent, wait until you reach the top of your arc (Ap for apoapsis) and are under 20km altitude and hit spacebar again to activate the next stage, which will be your parachute.

Edit: Actually, DeMatt's little img tutorial above is exactly what I just described, so make sure you check that out.
