Yes, I am reviving The MachingBird Challenge..... AGAAAAIN as it was lost in the server revival

The Maching Bird Challenge: How fast can you go on jet power?

Top speed will be measured by Highest Speed Over Land in the Flight Log, to prevent artificial inflation that can be caused via sub-orbital hops.

Read the rules, people!

Rules:

1. Must be jet powered only! The craft may not use any oxidizer, monopropellant, or Xenon.

-a. R.A.P.I.E.R. engine is not a jet. It is an aspirated rocket.

2. Must take off horizontally from the runway (need not retain landing gear for the duration of the flight)

3. Screenshots! Must have screenshots of:

-a. Your craft on the runway (preferrably moving).

-a2 Your craft from front view

-b. Your craft in flight.

-c. Your craft's Flight Log (can be accessed by pressing F3) This is neccessary, as top speed will be measured by Highest Speed Over Land

--c1. For clarification, no, you are not allowed to jump out of your craft then take the flightlog screenshot.

-d. The resources tab must be open at all times, as proof of appropriate fuel usage. This rule will be strictly enforced to ensure capsule MonoProp is not used!

-e. Any staging events that happen, such as drop-tanks, launch stages, wheel drops, etcetera.

4. Use of the dev console, particularly for part clipping, is exploitative and will be considered cheating. People who part clip will be put in a special catagory, If you are part cliping and not telling you will be banned from this competition

5. Planes that do not exceed mach 6 wont be added..... sorry

6. This is primarily a stock challenge, so only stock parts are allowed, along with no other mods being installed. This means that CFG modding will earn you a permanent ban from the challenge.

Exceptions are as such:

Mechjeb FAR DRE

Mechjeb and FAR will have their own sub winners circle DRE is just making it yourself harder i guess.

Dont forget to add the craft's name!!!

Also a new 0.90 list has been added since that update adds a whole bunch more control to the game and just makes craft possible that where impossible in 0.25 please do note if oyur plane is 0,90 or 0,25 otherwise you will be disqualified

There will be a price for most original design, ill deside whats original.

Please Clarify whether your craft is manned or unmanned.

Yes, I know I can look to see if there are pilots, but I'd like to keep myself from HAVING to do that.

Stock, unmanned, no mods used (though plenty installed). Final speed 2246. Should've tried a little harder - could've got a True Machingbird with another 50 m/s. Maybe when I have some time - the Kadvent Kalendar's got me tied up pretty good at the moment. I think I could get more speed from the Rhea if I flattened out the ascent profile a bit.

errrr its not part clipped.

i didnt use the dev console, i basically flipped 8 cubic struts backwards into an octo strut, then mounted 8 ram intakes onto those 8 mountpoints, and then put two cubic struts on the end of it so that it didnt fly apart.

its tricky, but possible even without the dev console.

Last I checked 2246 > 2056, so..........how did the design NOT achieve Mach 6?

My finger's hovering over the shenanigans button here. Fair warning.

I am noting that it wound up in the "manned" list though; the craft was unmanned. Just a point of order there.

So could I get a quick rule clarification? On the clipping rule, it sounds like we just can't use the console to enable full clipping, right? Like as long as a part is placed legally in SPH, we're good?

For example, I have a space plane here (so obviously not an entry) but as far as clipping is concerned, there's some aesthetic stuff that technically clips some parts together in a couple places. This would still be fine right?

Secondly, this part:

Does this mean that the flight is not permitted to leave the atmosphere? Thanks.

Edit: sorry, one last thing. I know this is an all stock parts challenge. The only mods I use are visual (eve, distant object enhancement) and kerbal engineer, is that all fine?

Well, if Nicky's entries are legit, then yours definitely is. He uses a stock technique to place 8 Ram intakes on a single octagonal strut by clipping 2 cubic struts into it WITHOUT using the F12 console. He then stacks these in rows on either side of the "plane" to get as much as possible intake to weight ratio, which he then carries to altitude with a couple wings so the it can actualy get up there. Then he ditches the wings and accelerates to infinity and beyond, or he gives it a good try at least, he's a lot faster than I am that's for certain.

Anyway, the first part of that story is where he clips the intakes into the strut and as far as I can tell previous entries that have been legalized used this or similar techniques.

I vote legal.

(I am a sinner though, my own entry took too much time to legally clip those intakes into the wings and stuff, so I just used the console for a bit in order to actualy get somewhere. I tried the strut clipping technique using a guide with images and all, but my machine just doesn't like it and at some point will refuse to place certain intakes, while the rest is just fine. From my own point of view I'm doing something far closer to real possibilities as Nicky because it's completely rediculous to have 8 objects in the same place, while having intakes attached or even part of a hull is the most normal thing in the world.)

I like the plane design by the way, looks good! won't go quite up to 2300 though without the rockets.
