Graphical glitch and display driver failure

Recommended Posts

KSP Version:0.90.0.705

What Happens:After a while the background starts developing all kinds of glitch, lots of random boxes, background turns black, vertical lines. if I try to keep playing it often crashes the display driver. Sometimes it recovers and ksp itself doesn't crash, other times the display driver crashes completely and requires a restart.

Mods / Add-Ons:Stock

Steps to Replicate:Happens every time game is loaded since updating to 0.90

Other Notes/Pictures/Log Files:

Trying to get a screenshot from a fresh install caused the computer to blue screen but this was from a modded version that shows the type of glitches.

Considering we're talking blue-screens and so forth, there's a good chance this is an issue with your hardware, or possibly corrupted operating system files. The first likely suspect would be your graphics card; after all, these kinds of graphical glitches tend to only show themselves when the graphics card is either severely overheating (probably almost to the point of actually melting some of the components), or is otherwise physically compromised due to age.

Other possible culprits might be the RAM or the hard drive, but the video card is significantly more likely here.

If we had the error from the blue-screen handy, we'd have a lot more to go on, but from what you've got there... well, it isn't KSP crashing, that's for sure. The computer's crashing before KSP ever does. Yeah, it's not looking good at all. :(

I was kind of wondering if it was a hardware problem but so far it has only occurred during KSP and it does so very consistently when I load it even if I just sit at the main menu. I even tried loading up my old 0.25 folder I had backed up and it runs fine, its solely 0.90 that seems to be causing problems. Would it really be that specific if my hardware is failing? If I get the bluescreen again I will try to get the error code but I can't say I am hoping to see it again.

Exact same problem. Stress/Heat-Tested video card, GPU, etc etc... My system can run far more intensive programs than KSP *and* can run earlier versions of KSP without any issues at any graphic settings/resolution. I use this system for work so it gets checked regularly for malware, viruses, etc; and whether active protection is on or off, KSP 0.90 still crashes with a Display Driver Error. Error occurs without mods; with mods like ATM, DDS, etc; with every video driver version to which I've been able to roll back. It's a bummer because this is one of the best games I've seen in a long time and I'd love to continue participating in these early stages. Same version as zero1m, but on Steam Windows 7.

-- That being said, in addition to a large community of players trying to help players on these forums, it's worth mentioning I've also noted a very active Developer presence (during the Holidays no less!). So that's giving me a lot of faith that if this is indeed an issue with KSP, it will be sorted out eventually: so nice to see a Team who cares enough to stick out their necks: keep up the good work!

Can you folks please post a screenshot of your Video Settings screen? We need all of you to compare notes; we need to find if you've got any similar settings that might be causing this. And if you haven't already, please upload your log files and DxDiag file. :)

In the meantime, some other things you can try are:

--Disable the PPFX (Edge Highlighting) Shaders in KSP's Settings.

--Lower the Texture Quality setting to Half-Res or lower.

--Turn off AntiAliasing, both in KSP, and in your graphics control panel.

--If you're running with OpenGL mode, please try running in standard (DirectX) mode.

But I've played around with all of the settings, trying different combinations, etc. Turned all settings to lowest possible (as indicated, lol) and still get the display driver crash every time. OpenGL/DirectX Mode makes no difference either: crash still occurs during flight, when viewing map, building, etc.

syregrimm, Dxdiag is saying you have an integrated Intel graphics chip with 64mb or RAM, this is not enough, it's sharing system RAM which can be overwritten by other programs.

You guys are using laptops arent you? Make sure they are not on powersave mode and that your Nvidia or AMD card is activated, and keep them plugged into the mains when playing 3d games.

In my case at least I am actually using a desktop tower not a laptop. The graphics card should be more then capable of running ksp and seems to run everything other then this particular version of ksp. It does seem to be getting worse I got another blue screen, here is the log.

hmm... I use a laptop with intel integrated graphics too, but even on power save mode, I don't get these glitches

comparing my stats to syregrimm, he has a superior machine to mine in almost every way.

Except possibly for RAM..

But from the looks, I think you might want to activate the sm3 terrain shaders, they make the terrain less buggy...

Maybe its over heating ? if not I suspect you need a patch on something or you are lacking ram.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I found a "fix" on *my* system anyway... At least it stops the crashes. Vager, you actually nailed the issue for me, that it was a RAM conflict between my integrated card and my Nvidia... Ironically, using *only* the Integrated Graphics for KSP (in the Nvidia Control Panel, selecting "Integrated Graphics" as the "Preferred Graphics Processor") prevented any and all crashes and I've been running (Vanilla) KSP 0.90 with 200+ part Builds and medium graphic settings. Not sure if this is going to work for anyone else, but good luck!
