How do you build your space station?

I start off with an idea of what will be included on the station, habitat modules, science, comms etc., and then send up a core that I can add the appropriate modules to. The specific design of each module is only finalised as I build them.

I usually design a huge station with >400 parts, cut it into modules, send up a core, add one module...

And then realize it takes too damn long and my laptop wouldn't handle the final product, so I design a smaller station and send it up in one launch.

The I usually dock one rocket/spaceplane to it and never visit it again, unless it's also a fuel depot.

I do it this way as shown in my little tutorial with craft.

It makes this refueling station in the end, just needs fairings and karbonite on top of stock (both of which will be stock soon so I will redesign and re-release then)

Aftet the launches you are left with a station in orbit which buiilds up fuel slowly and about 4 shuttles that will go pretty much anywhere (maybe not Moho reliably)

It will even get itself to Jool...

If building practical, my stations pretty much always follow the Core/hub/lab/fuel formula, sometimes combining parts ie. have the core include a lab and hub, if I feel like a big launch. Much more on a station is really not needed - maybe having a lander docked to it as well. I actually flew such a station in one piece (using four nukes attached to a big fuel tank) to Duna; it was compact enough to do that sort of thing and just maneuverable enough to hit its various maneuver nodes..

If I'm building for show, then I just wing it.

Another type I've been working on lately has been a station taken up only by SSTO's.

Took a lot of tweaking, but my 5-booster (3 RAPIER, 2 Turbo-Jet) Triton SSTO can take modules up to about 6 tons to a 180 x 180 km orbit (typically with dV to spare!)

Looks like this one took 8 launches (7 modules + one for the Kanadarm)

Initially, my "Station 1" was carefully designed as orbital science and construction outpost, and was built without much hassle or mishaps. Everything went according to plan, except actual usage: first expedition activated all the systems, did some science and left for Kerbin. Now it's serves as storage platform for derelict ships and modules, deserted, abandoned, forgotten. Since it's orbit have zero inclination down to 1/10 th of degree, it's sometime used as navigation aid, but never approached despite slightly more then one orange tank worth of LF stored there, mostly because of a rumor that station is haunted.

I remember my first space station when docking came out. It looked like 2 "L" letters connected with a whole lot of other not important things. It also had 2 space fighters and way too many parts.

Station 1 (clickable)

Left to right:

OSS3 interplanetary ship (mothballed)

Docking fixture with several orbital tugs attached. (and forgotten)

Service fixture. (Most of the stuff is probably stolen by now)

Habitat (uninhabited)

Mobile refueling vehicle. (Supposedly full of LF, if no-one drained it)

Do you plan to make this a circle ?

Oh yes. 24 launches it will take. Each segment is 9 of the MK3 crew cabins, there is a 5 degree angle per every 3 cabins.

Not sure if I'll finish by the time 1.0 releases though, at which point I'll start over.
