As long as it takes. Once they go out of Early Access things get serious and the professional reviewers will start scrutinizing more heavily. The game needs to be polished to a shine to get the best reviews possible (and thus encourage fresh new players to buy the game).

Hmm.. let me do a guesstimation..

A couple of years ago, updates came out every month (sometimes 2 months), then they did a big update (must be around 0.20) where they reorganized the pipeline so updates would come out sooner. After this updates came out around every 3 months..

So now they say the game is almost finished, i guess next update (1.0) should come out 3-4 months after the last update (0.90), witch would mean somewhere around April/May(Lets hope i am very wrong)

The Dawn space probe comes into orbit of the dwarf planet Ceres, in March. (Though the pictures won't be at their best, until later in the year.) A real-space news "coincidental release" might be good for KSP. Nonetheless, April seems more likely, given Maxmaps' squadcast comments.
