Wheels sink into runway

I have a heavily modded install of KSP because of RSS/RO/RP-0. When I launch a plane from the SPH the wheels sink into the runway, the plane can move forward but it's impossible to take off because it hits bumps in the surface below. This is a screenshot of what is happening.

I have found similar problems on the forum, but those are all with rover wheels that were assembled in the wrong rotation or wheels from a mod. I'm using stock plane wheels.

I also found another thread that blames an out of date Firespitter.dll file. I compared the DLL file from my install with the one in the latest release on github (7.1.5) and they are binary identical, so this is also not the issue.

How can I solve this?

Parts (especially landing gear) sinking into the runway is a known issue; IIRC it has something to do w/ how gear colliders work + the runway's collider not lining up exactly w/ the viewmodel. While RSS/RO do make it easier to notice, it can be observed in stock as well if you zoom in far enough.

As for the poor takeoff characteristics:

  1. The nose gear looks badly overloaded. The shock absorber is fully compressed (presumably due to too much mass sitting on it), so any bumps will get transmitted directly to the fuselage (which will make landing very "Fun").
  2. The rear landing gear should be slightly behind the center of mass, not way at the back of the plane (unless the CoM is actually back there). keptin made a great infographic about this (and other plane-design topics) back in 2013.
