Good animation software?

Toonz just went free, as "OpenToonz". It's the tool that was being used by the Ghibli Studios and Matt Groening's team. Actually not that overwhelming, highly customizable, and there's a lot of online tutorials available already. So, you're asking this at the right time.

Anyone know any good free animation software for making, well, animations or video intros?

What kind of animations do you want to do? 2D, 3D, simple graphics, more comprehensive scenes - what exactly?

Blender can do 2D stuff as well. Actually, Blender can do just about anything. If you look at the Blender Open movies the credits are done with Blender (see: Big Buck Bunny). Blender doesn't have a lot of built-in pre-made effects, but you can build things from scratch and will have a lot more control over things.

Edit: Specifically, you can do multi-plane animation using the orthogonal camera mode, which will flatten everything nicely- perspective mode can work if that's the visual style you want.
