Space is hard. Even in KSP. If space was easy, we'd have colonies everywhere by now. But it's hard. It can kill you at any moment. It can make your mission a failure at any moment.

My last trip to the mun somehow was so abysmally planned that the lander ran dry of fuel 70m/s shy of landing. Some creative lithobraking meant that the pilot survived... even if little else did.

Yeah, with the Mün f5 is your friend.

And again, my Mun lander ran out of fuel returning to orbit before periapsis was above the surface.  Elyris bailed and circularized with her maneuvering unit, and now she's waiting for Jeb to come back with another ship.  That lander had plenty of fuel before it went down, but somebody overburned, three times, getting down...and totally didn't tip the lander over (it was stable before I switched off the SAS and RCS, I swear it was, but then over it went -- upslope).  Fortunately, lots of RCS meant it was able to stand back up after retracting the legs...
