    Bottle Rocketeer
  1. I don't understand this. I have built a rocket that as far as I can tell is symmetrical but it twists as it goes up. Below is a short video of my problem. What am I doing wrong?
  2. Okay so I have tried to reach the target specs on the way up but it doesn't seem possible. With a single RT-10 solid fuel booster I cannot get enough speed before I get to the correct altitude. With three together I can reach the correct altitude and speed together but then there is no way of turning them off when the parachute fires so even though all the conditions are met it is not recognized as a successful test. I am assuming that is because the boosters are still firing while the parachute is deployed. Then I switched to using liquid rocket fuel and engines but regardless of how many I use I always reach the correct height before the correct speed and just as I reach the correct speed I exceed the height. How can I accelerate faster without also shortening the time it takes to get to the correct altitude?
  3. I am having some difficulty with putting a wing on my rockets as they don't seem to line up correctly. Below is a short video to show you what I mean. In the video I ask if it makes a difference to the game but since making the video I seem to have noticed that it causes my rocket to twist slowly as it moves upwards. Can this problem be sorted?
  4. I hadn't thought of testing it on the way up. Isn't that a bit of a cheat? I'm sure it works but as a space simulator it seems like a rather unrealistic way of testing a parachute. As for planes, I haven't begun to try building a plane. Still just testing rockets.
  5. I am still early on in the game trying to complete some of the parts testing missions. Right now I am trying to test the parachute but I cannot get all the requirements at the same time. It has to be fired off between 4500 and 5900 metres, and between speeds of 250 and 680 m/s. I don't get it. Every time I try my pod has slowed down to under 250 m/s by the time it reaches 5900 metres. The capsule is basically a conical tin can. Surely it should be speeding up as it falls, not slowing down? What am I doing wrong?
  6. My saves were still very early on in the game and I haven't played it for a while so I just did a complete reinstall and fixed the problem. Thanks for the help though.
  7. I have been offline for about 3 weeks so today I checked for updates before playing. The program found an update so I installed it and started the program. Now when I play, every part that I have is doubled. Yes, I am showing two of every part. For most of them 1 of the parts is greyed out so it cannot be selected. For others both of the parts are greyed out and I cannot select either. What is going on? If this is unclear then watch the video below, it is very short.
  8. Well, I read all your advice but it doesn't make any sense. I've only done 3 missions so far in career mode and I now have only just over $1000 for the next mission. There are no contracts available for me to do so no way to make any more money. I'm really not impressed. I really liked this game before they implemented the money. Now, I'm not sure I will play it again. Really disappointed. Oh well, this won't be the first game I've spent good money on and then never played again.
  9. I ask if money is new because I got Kerbal Space Program when I was playing on my dual core 32 bit system on Windows XP. When I was playing then I was following Scott Manley's youtube tutorials and I managed to get to his 4th tutorial about getting an orbit around the Mun and I hadn't even considered the money in the game. I don't think I had even looked at how much I had or how much things cost. Now I have build a new computer and I am playing on an i5 Quad Core machine running windows 7 64 bit and I am only up to Scott Manley's second tutorial and I am totally out of money in the game. What is going on? Having to acquire science to be able to get new parts is fine. I don't mind that but then being further limited by money constraints has seriously lowered my opinion of the game. I want to play the Career mode but the money situation sucks. Can it be switched off? If not then is there a money cheat because I wanted to play this game to learn about the science of space flight, not how to balance NASA's bank account.
  10. Okay so I tried again a few times and I'm getting the same result. I have definitely not changed my inclination at all. I should be fully in line with the Mun's equator yet I still cannot get a decent escape trajectory. One thing I am confused by is why when Scott Manley does it in his video the projected orbit around Kerbin that he gets is elongated yet when I do it I get this big circular orbit. What am I doing wrong? See the pictures below. The return trajectory that Scott Manley achieves: The return trajectory I achieve:
  11. I have been trying to learn this program by watching Scot Manley's tutorials he did on YouTube. I am completely stuck on the fourth one though. Can anyone help? In this tutorial Scott alters a rocket to get to the Mun. He then launches and enters an orbit of approx 105K above Kerbin. He then does a burn to leave Kerbin and enter an orbit around the Mun. Up to this point I can copy him almost exactly and everything is fine. I run into problems trying to do what he does exactly 20 minutes into the video. When Scott sets up a maneuver node so that he can escape the Mun's orbit he sets up a trajectory that not only escapes the Mun but also puts the Apoapsis of his new trajectory to within Kerbins atmosphere so that he can land on the planet without the need for another burn. When I place a maneuver node on my orbit around the Mun I cannot achieve the same trajectory regardless of where on the orbit I place it or how long I set to burn for. The closest I can get the Apoapsis of the new trajectory to Kerbis is about 500k. This means that I need to do another burn as I approach Kerbin in order to change my trajectory so I can land but then I always run out of fuel. I tried to add more fuel but that also adds more mass which means I have to burn more fuel to achieve orbit in the first place so I still run out of fuel. Anyone have any ideas? I'm stumped.
