  1. I've been making a script that uses terminal_velocity value using vessel.flight(srf_frame).terminal_velocity (based on the Python version from the docs) and it seems that the wrong values for terminal velocity are being calculated

I had it displayed as a separate variable in the console and in the script as well and terminal velocity seems to drop from 7-10 km down to 90 m/s and then hovers around 100m/s until 12km

for kerbalx craft that's premade in the game, it went down to 70m/s at 9km and I'm not sure what's causing this

I'm trying to use terminal velocity / velocity ratio to calculate perfect ascent speed, but it's really bugging out all of my take offs right now

    any suggestions?

Cool.  Did you notice that Dante Lauretta, PI of OSIRIS-REx (basically my boss) commented on your video:

haha no I didn't. Thanks for the notice.

I hope you don't get in trouble for playing so much KSP  :)

Although admittedly, I do it at work all the time too. I'm a full time math teacher and convinced my principal to give me free reign in using KSP to teach concepts.

  3. Hi everyone,

This is my first challenge and being the math teacher I thought I'd do something I'm comfortable with - use math to do something fun.

I used cabin only mode to land on the Mun and return back to Kerbin - so I'd like to challenge you to do the same or better.

Full video is here with explanations and such.

    Rules:

    • no map or nodes
    • no cheats
    • no mods other than visual enhancements
    • F2 has to be enabled for the entire trip
    • Can only use panels inside the craft
    • Try to stay in cabin mode the whole time other than EVA
    • Extra challenge: try to do it in a landing can (no instruments at all)

There are no points, it's really a completion task more than anything. I know it's hard to be honest about this challenge, so we're going on an honor system - try to follow the rules as this is a lot more challenging than you think.

Provide pics or video if you can.

Person making it to a different planet and returning safe gets the biggest bragging right.

  4. I don't know how I missed this mod back in 2013 when it came out, but this is definitely a must have to any serious Kerbanaut that loves using RemoteTech

kOS has got to be the best teaching tool I've ever seen to. I'm thinking of even using this in my classroom at some point (I'm a teacher) to teach kids basic coding skills

  5. Hi guys,

I'm going to be introducing the game to a new year of students this year, but still trying to work out the kinks from last year as students were too discouraged by the game in comparison to other games I tried like Minecraft (including the Galacticraft Mod which pretty much adds space travel to Minecraft)

Thanks for the feedback though. I'll try to give the EDU missions a go, although from what I see there aren't that many and like someone mentioned, it's sad they stopped developing them.

I think this game would be perfect for a summer program, especially if you introduce mods like kOS that allows kids to use basic programming to program their launches and teaches kids the idea of coding. Then again, I think Minecraft has advanced so much more in that sense and mods like LearnToMod in Minecraft make that a lot easier to implement and a lot more affordable too.

I'm sort of stuck with this dilemma now. I do want to use KSP, but my students are obsessed with Minecraft a lot more and not a single one had a positive comment after their KSP edu experience :/

Two of the girls flat out told me (albeit jokingly) "we hate Kerbal Space Program" because they kept crashing and had trouble understanding the idea of orbits compared to other kids in class. They still loved the experience because cmon, they got to play a game in class, but they just didn't enjoy it as much as when we switched to Minecraft and got to become masters of their own world.

I think the overall learning curve is a bit too higher for middle-high school kids and in my opinion, many teens do not have the maturity level to persevere through constant failures that KSP throws at you. I'll see how it goes this year though and I'm kind of excited to do it with them as it's kinda fun to see kids scream "oh noooo my Jebedian died! oh wait, he's fine"

  6. Hi guys

I've been reworking my old beta designs and realized that literally none of them is good for 1.02

Ion engine hybrid SSTO doesnt do anything

Nuclear engine SSTO is not particularly effective and has to be really huge

even Rapier engines seem kinda underpowered

So through experimentation I ended up creating this.

Does anyone have any other ideas for how to SSTO in 1.02?
