Description:

The PBK-1 is a new generation of low-cost, high efficiency armed maritime patrol aircraft made possible courtesy of cutting-edge small-diameter turbine technology in KSP 1.0.5. It is intended for coastal operations ranging from armed patrol to amphibious transport.

The Katarina's unique planing hull design reduces hydrodynamic drag during its takeoff run. Water landing speeds are in the range of 35-50m/s - watch the sink rate! Activate flaps (Action Group 2) for takeoff.

Optional (stock) air to ground missiles fitted to increase possibility of sales to private Kerbal military companies and nation-states.

I see where you got the name from, nice! But can you actually make a detailed PBY Catalina? Take that as a friendly challenge. ;)

  2. Because I still had horizontial movement? I tried to kill horizontial velocity, but it just kept increasing again, I thought that was just due to Kerbin rotating under me.

Also, you have yet to produce your entry.

Edit: Also, could you explain further by posting your entry and explaining how mine is disqualified? The answers to that question is the kind of thing that should have been in the challenge OP from the start.

Sorry about the fact that I do not have an entry. I will start trying to do the challenge. The problem is that I got distracted and installed RSS, and am currently too lazy to uninstall it (see comment #4 for the reason why). I can, however, try to show you an example of what it should look like (with infinite fuel, as the challenge will probably be too hard to do in RSS). That is, of course, after I learn how to post game screenshots on the forum. Also, the screenshot you took in comment #11 was exactly what the completed challenge should look like (Orbital speed=0). Just try keeping that speed for a much longer time to actually complete it. Anything more than 0m/s (that includes 0.1m\s) is not allowed.

  3. The contest specifically said orbital velocity. Doesn't matter which you feel is better, in this contest surface velocity is incorrect, and only an orbital velocity of 0 counts.

5th Horseman is correct. From Kerbin's reference frame, your ships should be literally standing still in Kerbins SOI. Yes,smjjames, your attempt is disqualified. Sorry.

  4. I have a deep space probe hanging out there at about 25x Eeloo orbital distance, if I take it to zero orbital velocity it takes 12 minutes to get up to 1m/s due to sun's gravity.

    Does that count?

    Sure, I think that does.

    [Edit]

Nevermind, that does not count. You have to be truly hovering, not slowly falling.

  5. I might give this one a go.

Here is an initial test to see what will survive a drop. I already know that the cubic strut has a nice high impact tolerance, so I've stacked some under a landing can, yeah I know it's not a rover (yet), and dropped it from 65 metres. I reckon that would generate about the same speed or greater that a 100-150m Duna drop.

Seems to work pretty well on Kerbin, I don't see why something similar could not be added to a rover landing platform of some sort.

That's actually quite good. Nice :D

  6. This might be a little too much, but can someone please make a mod that adds realistically sized stars such as UY Scuti, VY Canis Majoris, or Eta Carinae? The reasons are:

    1. UY Scuti and VY Canis Majoris are both thousands of times bigger than the Sun, and that just astounds me.

    2. Eta Carinae is a GIGANTIC binary star system with a luminosity of over 5,000,000 times that of the sun. It is also in a nebula and is surrounded by gas and dust that constantly fluctuates in interesting ways. Holy crap.

    3. I am completely obsessed with deep space exploration. And, by "deep", I mean "thousands of light years."

If those stars are too far, at least add Proxima Centauri, which is just 8 light years away and is the closest star to our Sun.

  7. With 64 k installed, Kerbin slowly loses its textures the higher you go. By that, I mean that the farther you go from Kerbin, the more it stops looking like a planet and starts looking like a white sphere. What did I do wrong? Is there something I missed in the downloading procedure? I copied the 64k folder into gamedata as I was told to do so, so I do not know what happened.

  8. When I land on a different planet, all I get to do is hop around, act dramatic, and (attempt to) go back to Kerbin. But I want action! Can someone who actually knows how to mod (not my area of expertise) create actual weather systems on the different planets in the Kerbol system? For example Duna, the game's analogy to Mars, should have massive dust storms that cover the whole planet, with a potential to block visibility and damage bases and vehicles on the surface. Jool should have winds of several thousand kilometers per hour. Venus should have a cloud covering and temperatures hot enough to melt iron.

If there is already a mod like that, please inform me.
