Does building replicas affect your creativity?

I guess I would compare KSP replicas more to model-making, trying to recreate details with parts available require similar amount of thought and creativity as making completely new designs on your own.

I didn't made much of replicas myself but I enjoyed making (bit stubby TBH) Saturn I block II back in the day.

No, in fact it forces you to be more creative in usage of parts, e.g. the new radiator parts have great potential as spacecraft panels aside being what Squad made them as.

I find you can never make a nice looking "replica" out of stock parts, they all end up looking like a jumble of things clipped together. I find personal craft tend to look much better on the whole. As for performance, well, I mean, you can say you're replicating performance but you're really not.

I agree with this, but there is another possibility in using replicas to do a personal mission, e.g. Space Shuttle-launched missions combined with Apollo hardware to Duna.
