"Deploy Shielded" Tweakable on Landing Legs?

This may be "old news" to everyone else, as I skipped KSP 1.1 completely and stayed in 1.0.5 until 1.2 was released.  But be that as it may...

What is this "Deploy Shielded" toggle in the landing leg tweakables?  What is it for, and what does it do?  I have tried toggling it in-game, but for the life of me I can't see that it does anything at all.

(And I'm getting tired of Bill obsessively mashing the button just because he thinks he'll figure it out THIS time for sure.  I have other plans for him, after all.)
