Begin with an all-new installation of KSP version 1.4.3, running in 64-bit. And be sure to have 12GB of RAM for smooth gameplay.
If reusing an existing install, empty the GameData folder of all contents but for the folder [KSP]\GameData\Squad. If starting with an entirely new install, run KSP once without mods so it can build certain default settings. Do not skip this.
