Isn't Cosmonaut and Astronaut the exact same thing?

Yes, my understanding is that cosmonaut is astronaut in russian, but for some reason, instead of treating it as a trasnlation, it's treated as another thing.

But this is off topic. RIP John Glenn

Cosmonaut means "universe sailor"; astronaut means "star sailor". Not really much of a difference, except that IIRC the Russians were trying to convey a sense of conquest while the Americans were trying to convey a sense of exploration.

as·tro·naut
ˈastrəˌnôt/
noun

  1. a person who is trained to travel in a spacecraft.
cos·mo·naut
ˈkäzməˌnôt,ˈkäzməˌnät/
noun

  1. a Russian astronaut.

From Google itself. That should solve the problem. Remember, this is a John Glenn thread, not English class.

That doesn't solve anything, really. You are right though, this is not English class.

RIP John Glenn.

As if 2016 was not bad enough already...

For exoplaneteers, astronomers, and meteorologists, 2016 was an amazing an interesting year.

R.I.P John Glenn. [I feel terrible that I thought he died years ago, but only found out otherwise when he truly passed on]. Krakenspeed, Glenn. You will never been forgotten...

RIP John Glenn.

You guys seem to have a problem with definitions so I figured I's just C+P them and stop the English arguments.

RIP in peace John Glenn.
