Edit your own tech tree?

I am wondering if a mod exists or could exist that would let me experiment with redesigning the career mode tech tree. I've seen the mods that redesign it, but I'd like to play around with different ways to progress through the tech.

Yes, Module Manager.

The tech tree itself a text file in "Kerbal Space Program\GameData\Squad\Resources".  Parts are assigned to a node from within their own part config files.  You can edit these directly, but it's best to do it using a Module Manager script so changes can be easily undone.  That is how all those mods you've seen do it.
