Railgun sub-probe shooter?

Recommended Posts

I just came to this crazy idea 1 minute ago:

  1. Build a probe that has a railgun, capacitors and a reactor on board
  2. The railgun either is pre-loaded with one sub-probe, which is small and heavily G-tolerant - or it can reload a few more sub-probes later (see 8.)
  3. The sub-probe contains built in solar panels and/or RTG, a few small experiments, a battery (RealBattery compatible?) and an antenna, nothing more (no RCS, no reaction wheels)
  4. When the main probe is in a pre-set orbit, a maneuver node is created to have a quick flyby of any celestial body (preferable one far away)
  5. The railgun capacitors are charged
  6. The manuever setup is used by the railgun to calculate the orientation of the main probe and how much energy to unleash
  7. Shoot it
  8. The main probe will counter accelerate and lose its orbit totally (gun coil to a few % of the acceleration power of the sub-probe), perhaps it's just going to reentry
  9. Main probe could be recovered by StageRecovery if the parameters fit
