Why build a comm network around Kerbin?

Noob question here, I just watched a video where someone built a comm network around Kerbin so he can stay in contact with the Mun and Minmus. I've never had a problem communicating from the Mun, unless I had the wrong antenna or was on the dark side. I could understand Minmus since it's further away. I'm playing career mode with default settings.

There are groundstations at kerbin wich can be deactivated via options. If u deactivate them and u play with commnet on u will have to set up a Network for kerbin

Thank you. I guess I didn't check settings very thoroughly not to see that choice.

Having a comms network (3-4 sats) at the edge of Kerbin SOI also provides coverage on the "dark" side of Mun and Minmus.

Something that ground stations can't.
