Thought this might be of interest to space and sci-fi nerds: the first four episodes of TenCent's adaptation of the Three Body Problem novel are streaming for free on YouTube. English subs available. Note: some Chinese commercials included.

At the same time, however, there is also a 3D animated version that has received universally poor reviews. The reason for this is that the animation writers and directors are basically re-adpatation based on their own interpretation rather than the original novel.

I have not read the book yet, but I've seen a lot about it in the press. After watching the first 2 episodes I can't say the show is really gripping me. I find the premise that scientists are massively offing themselves because they find out their science isn't right wholly unbelievable - then again, maybe they are being offed by some agency that hasn't been introduced yet (don't spoil it if that's the case ).

I find it very fascinating to see how Chinese TV tropes are different from western ones though. It's extremely rare for anything Chinese to make it to my screens, and the ones that do are usually literary or historical dramas - not my cup of tea. It's nice to see a big 'popular' TV production for a change instead of just the latest film that won the Oscar for best foreign movie.

Yeah, the animation is bad, so DON'T WATCH IT OR YOU WILL BE KILLED
