USB Game Controller

It works great, and you can use the thumb stick for RCS Translation (throttle as well, fine tune might I add!). There aren't quite as many keys as on a keyboard, but it is suitable so you can fly for the most part w/o using the keyboard. The best part is, it's just plug in and play. Just configure in settings and you're good.

It's also worth noting it's only $30, vs +$100 on some other fancy junk.

Edit: By game controller I assume you mean joystick, which just happens to be the preferred method of spacecraft control.

Gamepads run great. I use an Xbox style one. Your control scheme makes or breaks it though and you have to set it up yourself because there is no default and no context for the game to realize "you're using a gamepad, lets do contextual control switching" It's amazing how much modern games do that.

I use the left stick for pitch-yaw, the dpad for translation (click the sticks for forward-back), and the camera on the right analog stick.

Getting the triggers to work right involves a .cfg file edit.
