universal RCS controls

Recommended Posts

There are 3 different RCS control schemes, Flight, EVA, and docking. This cause a lot of control confusion, and makes docking and EVAs seem a lot harder than they are. I think it would make EVAs and docking a lot easier if they had the same controls as flight.

You can go in the control setting and change it so it has the same control.

Staging and Docking modes can be set to use the same controls; but kerbals are separate. That's where the real problem is. I hate this 'rotate to camera' nonsense. I wish kerbal jetpacks simply used full 6-axis RCS-like controls. Someone aparently thought that the current setup would make things more intuitive. They were wrong.

(And I never use Docking mode. I don't see the point of it. Gimme all the controls at once.)

Yeah, I'm with you alecdacyczyn -- I've gotten very good at bringing in a vessel to dock using the RCS controls from Staging mode. I'd be perfectly happy with the same set of controls for my Kerbal in EVA: commands relative to the Kerbal's facing, not relative to the camera, which is irrelevant anywhere else in the game.

I hate this 'rotate to camera' nonsense.

That can be switched off, too, in Settings.cfg:

EVA_ROTATE_ON_MOVE = False

And you get Q and E keys to rotate the Kerbal around his vertical axis. Also, you can change his pitch using mouse (draw with LMB up to pitch down, or down to pitch up).

I wish there was chase camera mode for EVA Kerbals. Or even 1st person view. Then, it would make sense to have full RCS control. For current camera modes available for EVA the control options are appropriate and full RCS control would make things exceedingly hard.
