Lag while planets visible on Debian

Running 64 bit Debian Sid. With both 32bit and 64bit KSP I get a lot of lag when a planet is visible in the camera. For example, if I'm orbiting Kerbin and turn the camera to look at the ship pointed out towards space then it runs smoothly. However, when I turn the camera around to look towards Kerbin i experience a large amount of lag. Lowering graphics settings seems to have no effect on this problem.

Here's a fix for the game's oceans if you wish. It should help reduce the lag a bit, it has for me! And honestly, without SM3, everything looks...ugly? Anyway, here's the fix: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/43253-Default-Terrain-Quality-Without-most-of-The-Lag%21
