I find that, as a rule of thumb, if you have a part designed to detach and reattach that needs struts between them to maintain structural integrity, then you should probably rethink the design. Struts between these parts can be useful during certain kinds of acceleration (like when launching from Kerbin) but once spaceborn (where you can better control thrust and rotation and drag is no longer a factor) they should be redundant.

That said, bigger docking ports have a more firm grip when attached than smaller ports do. If you have the space to go big, then go big.

If you are looking for a stock-ish solution, perhaps explain or provide a picture that illustrates what you are trying to do. Then we can see if there are any stock sort of ways to accomplish that.
