  1. Thanks all for making my day I see there is still a lot of "doh!" moments I can achieve. As an update... I ALMOST made it to the moon... Well, I reached orbit in a totally excrementsty elipse, reached the moon anyway but couldn't get it to a moon orbit But, I see it as a learning process and my next try will hopefully be better. I'm mostly playing with my kids watching so I can't put in too many hours anyway. And I don't want to finally land on Mun without them being present Oh and thanks Cpt Kerbalkrunch for the tip with the settings. Will definitely look into it.
  2. You don't want to know how often I flipped parts around, rewatched the video, compared parts and scratched my head :)) Well, I guess I will never do that mistake again hehe
  3. Oh... my... god.... ehm... yes... I'm THAT stupid....it really was the throttle... I'm sorry to have wasted your time... I will go in my corner and cry now.... Thanks a lot for helping
  4. Hi all, I'm very new to the game and still learning. I recently watched a 5 hour learning video from dasvaldez called "Kerbal Space Academy" and tried to re-create the rocket to land on the moon. However, even when I'm taking the exact same parts he is and build it (more or less) the same way, my rocket just stands on the platform and does not lift off. What I don't get is, that I have a TWR of 1.35 when I'm in the Vehicle Assembly (in atmospheric, based on Kerbal Engineer). When I put it on the platform and start, Engineer shows me only 0.67 TWR (which would explain why it's not starting). But why am I losing so much TWR? And why was it working for Das? Was there a major update that may have screwed the design. What TWR do I have to have in VAB to have enough on the platform? My Booster section mainly consists of FL-T800's and LV-T45 engines. I have uploaded it to KerbalX if someone would be kind enough to take a look at it and tell me where I goofed. I really want to learn what I'm doing wrong: Mun Lander Mk 1 Thanks a lot in advance for any tipps. Edit: Set to "solved".
  5. Thank you all for the great tips and links. That gives me a lot to read into and to try out. So far I like the "trial and error" way and I don't see fails as a bad thing. However, I'm sure there are good ways to improve myself. I also like the idea of reverse engineering. I also try to see patterns in tutorials. For example: I watch/read 3 or 4 tutorials for the first orbit flight and try to see what they do in similar ways or differently. And yes, I will try to not post questions I could have researched with 5 minutes googling... I promise Thanks again to all who took the time to answer.
  6. Hi all, I'm a very fresh player in the Kerbal Universe and at the moment I'm taking my babysteps. However, I wonder if there is a good way to learn the game. Now I know there are tons of tutorials and I could just build the rockets they build there. But somehow I feel that this is not the best way to learn. What I fail to see (atm) is WHY certain rockets work, while others don't. For example, with my first few tries to reach the orbit, I often have the engines to overheat. My guess is that I have a too heavy rocket. But is there a way to "see" (or calculate) it beforehand? How much "power" do I need to reach the orbit and can I go from there? So basically, what I'm looking for is basically tutorials about the tech, not about how to reach Mun as quickly as possible. I don't mind taking minor steps one after the other, if I have the feeling of learning and making progress. Does that somehow make sense?
