Is there a reason planted flags show as ongoing missions in Mission Control. Is this a convenient way of finding prior landing sights or is there more to it.

Is there a reason that a planted flag shows in mission control as an ongoing mission even after the vehicle and Kerbalnaut have been recovered. Is this simply a convenient way to revisit prior landing sites or is there more to it.
