Project Magic Boulder (aka project magic)
cantab replied to MrWalrus123's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Heh, I did this mission a while ago actually. My boulder, a 68-ton C-class. I know I overdid the glow: Its orbit round Ike: The lengthy mission album: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjWATHny Five launches, numerous rendezvous and dockings, and several fatal crashes. But some of the crew at least did live to walk on Kerbin again! The mission was stock aside from the usual info mods (KER, KAC, PreciseNode, maybe others). Though I had kethane installed I didn't use it on this mission. I make it 245 points. -
If you're open to mods, Firespitter's electric propellers work well for boats, though they are noisy. Otherwise ions for a slow boat or aerospikes for a faster one are the most straightforward option. The key thing is to keep the drag down. I believe the water drag works much like the air drag, so most parts are awful. Air intakes are well known as good floats and wing sections can work quite well too. Infiniglide might also work well, provided you keep control and don't take off. And you could attempt a reaction-wheel-powered paddle boat, but I think the chief problem will be the paddles misaligning with the boat hull any time you leave the boat and come back to it.

9/10. If that flies well, nice going! I tried something similar and the low-speed handling was diabolical. Then again, I was using FAR.

7/10 Needs more struts.

Problem accessing WIKI [wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com]
cantab replied to GeorgeG's topic in Kerbal Network
I don't know if any of the Squad staff have looked into it at all, or how much work it needs to fix. The internet though doesn't respect evenings and weekends, and I don't think leaving a website down for two days is a good approach. But I suppose it's for the Squad management to decide. -
Provided your graphics card has at least one DVI-I output you can use a simple passive adapter to connect your old VGA monitor. That's exactly what I do with mine, even have that same 1280x1024 resolution that was common before everything went widescreen.

What are the feats that you've accomplished in KSP?
cantab replied to Columbia's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Landing on Minmus with the jetpack and returning to the spaceship in orbit, without any instrumentation mods. I've done grander and more complex missions since, but that is still one of my proudest achievements. EVA landings are a doddle with mods like KER and NavHUD, but without them they're a serious seat-of-the-pants challenge. Another that again is maybe not my outright most impressive mission but is certainly special for me is my Smith 2. It's hardly a fancy build, but by using a whole string of gravity assists that little guy flew past every planet, while its near-twin skipped Eeloo and instead plunged into the Sun. After a mission like that I think I can count myself as an expert on gravity assists. -
I got a 750 Ti. Reviews have it as a good budget card, though I've not played many games on it myself. Certainly handles stock KSP no problem. If you want to save a little money and get a little less performance, consider the regular 750 but do get a 2 GB model. In the other direction, the new 960 is out with a lot more performance than a 750 Ti and a step up from the old 760, but I think that's over budget. The harder part for me was which brand and model. I opted for the EVGA GTX 750 Ti SC. Things to look for I would say: * The physical size. Especially for the 750 and 750 Ti some like mine are compact while others are larger. If you need a low profile card that really limits your choice too. * The power requirements. Check that the total wattage can be handled by your power supplies; the modern nVidia cards help here by being very efficient. Check also what auxiliary connectors the card requires (for example some 750 Tis need a 6-pin PCI-E connector, others including mine do not) and whether your PSU has them. * The monitor connections. You might be guided by your current monitors. Otherwise I would try and get a graphics card with a DisplayPort connector. * The noise levels. You can only really find this out from reviews. * The clock speeds. Most graphics cards are "factory overclocked" to some extent, which can give you a small performance boost. Also try and find out if a fast-clocked card can maintain those speeds, some end up throttling themselves back.

Best way to redirect Class E asteroid
cantab replied to Crusher48's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
You can, but multiple claws are known to attract game bugs. An approach I've used is to dot small control sections around the asteroid, like this: https://flic.kr/p/nVTQZ7 But I never tried it on anything bigger than that 500-ton D class, which has four of the control sections you can see. The tug, incidentally, only gave about 100 m/s of delta-V with the asteroid, but that was enough to aerocapture into an elliptical Kerbin orbit. -
You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!
cantab replied to Mastodon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
No pics, but earlier I did the old drop the rocket from the clamps blunder. The ship pretty much collapsed but the - round - command pod bounced and rolled a little way away. -
Decided to quickly build something to go to Bop and Pol. Yeah...I don't exactly do quick builds. I go in style. Mod parts you can see: Joolian Discovery, Zero Point, Modular Rocket Systems, TAC Life Support.
-
Where can I change the maximum distance setting? I've hit this same issue with the Joolian Discovery pod - pretty much spherical and about 5 m diameter. (And I also have some 5 m tanks in my install).

Best way to redirect Class E asteroid
cantab replied to Crusher48's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Meet it in solar orbit. Though it takes a bit more delta-V to reach it that's delta-V without the asteroid. Once you meet it it only takes a small correction to line up a gravity assist or aerocapture. And of course use nuclear engines. For manouvering them, one approach is to simply fly the tug around the asteroid as needed, rather than even try and rotate the massive rock. -
I only paid £10 for Kerbal Space Program, and I feel bad about it.
cantab replied to DBT85's topic in KSP1 Discussion
You could do worse than buy yourself KerbalEDU. That's got some interesting extras with it that aren't otherwise available. -
From most of Saturn's moons the view of the rings is nothing much really, because the moons orbit at more or less the same inclination as the rings. The ring shadows on Saturn itself would be quite striking though, and no doubt lead to all sorts of myths and legends.

Get Manned & Un-Manned Rovers to other planets.
cantab replied to Sully805's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
On Duna - and many other places - landing the rover on its wheels is reasonable. I suggest chutes to slow the fall and stabilise it, and engines for the final touchdown. To get back into orbit you have a choice - a separate ascent vehicle, an ascent stage that decouples from the rover, or make the whole thing fly back up. -
The names, though made-up mishmashes, have all been distinctly male and of English origin. That's good evidence the Kerbals we've had are intended as male.

Any sense in using Ion engines?
cantab replied to ROXunreal's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
The main problem with using ion engines on larger ships is the lack of larger xenon tanks. A cluster of engines isn't too bad, but if you need three or four tanks per engine the part count goes way up. Numerous mods have larger xenon tanks though; MRS includes a couple though they still aren't mega-big, while Near Future has some huge tanks along with a range of mod ion engines, solar arrays, and nuclear reactors. Also keep in mind that for ships large enough to justify a nuclear engine, you would need to be specifying a lot of delta-V for ions to be worthwhile instead. -
Does for me, I just flipped my screen inverted using the xfce display settings tool. The nVidia settings tool, which I find more powerful for multi monitor setups, also has rotation options though I don't know if they take instant effect.

I don't believe overheating per se would cause BSODs or memory corruption, but it's not a good thing. The obvious thing is to clean it. Take the computer apart as far as you are willing and give it a thorough going over with some canned air. I did that to the CPU cooler in my desktop and it went from hitting 100 °C with a single core loaded to staying below 50 with all three loaded - dust buildup makes a huge impact on temperatures. Then, as said, run some tests. memtest86 will test your memory, prime95 will test your processor - but sort your cooling first because it will heat it up harder than even your games. Other software can test your graphics. If any of these tests give errors, then if you are overclocked roll the speeds back to stock. If you get errors at stock speeds then you need to replace the hardware in question. Ultimately solid state electronics can and do fail.

Why is it taking so long to build the SLS?
cantab replied to FishInferno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
While I don't think Nibb's comments on the engineering and bureaucracy are wrong, it's a pretty damning state of affairs to be honest. -
Max stated it's the letter not the number. Presumably he wanted to nip speculation that it's Unity 5 in the bud.

Well, the most important name in KSP is surely Harvester! So it could be anything that he considers his "pet project" (beyond just KSP itself). But remember, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/108159-What-is-Project-V?p=1687492&viewfull=1#post1687492 So we know that it was mentioned on the forums, probably in this thread, before that post. That means the leading candidates for the name are Valentina Tereshkova, and female Kerbals in the game, or Ven, and his Stock Revamp becoming the new stock. With I suppose Volkswagen as an outside chance, either related to an update to the game's rovers or a pun on bug fixing.

Agreed. IMHO unless you're a Free Software purist (in which case why are you playing KSP instead of a Free game ) or involved in Linux kernel development there's no reason not to use the proprietary driver with an nVidia card. And for what it's worth the years I've been using the proprietary nVidia driver have mostly been spent running two monitors at different resolutions. The nVidia settings tool is very capable for setting this up and the only problem I had was one program that would pop up a small window in the "void" space on the desktop.
