What will you build once 1.0.5 drops?
Alaiteir replied to Mad Rocket Scientist's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I'm planning on using that new Mk.3 Cargo Ramp to try and build a Valkyrie TAV style cargo shuttle personally (The one from James Cameron's AVATAR) -
Haven't had a chance to try out 1.0.5 yet, are we able to make craft that can sink and explore the ocean floor in stock KSP now?

Dres asteroids as a stop off point
Alaiteir replied to Alaiteir's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yeah I'd managed to find a few posts which talked about it in the past, but they were mainly focussed on it from an efficiency point of view. As mentioned above, I'm not really bothered by the efficiency or if there's any reason other people go (for me, getting to build an orbital refinery there is enough of a reason), I'm mainly trying to find out if anyone knows about Dres-Jool transfer windows and delta-V -
Hello! I recently found out that if you visit Dres and then wait for a bit, asteroids start spawning in orbit around it. Deciding to send a probe there (never been anywhere except Kerbin (and moons) and Duna, so was pretty pleased with that regardless), I've so far found started tracking two Class C asteroids in what seem like very well circularized orbits with no extreme inclinations that I can tell. I've never caught an asteroid before, but these seem much easier to get to than near-Kerbin ones (aside from making it to Dres in the first place anyway), and as such look like they might be good for using as sources of ore for refining. The thing I'm not too sure about though, is the idea of using a fuel dump in Dres orbit as a stop off point on the way to Jool a good idea? I know that it takes a lot of delta-V to reach Dres and so if I was just sending a small one way trip to Jool then it probably wouldn't be worth it on account of having to get into and then Dres orbit. However, I'm planning on sending a couple of large carriers (part of the reason why I haven't been interplanetary much is I'm determined to do it with large, inefficient, SSTO carrying carrier ships (Like my first one to Duna back in whatever version of KSP it was: http://imgur.com/a/aGMDH#0 ), and seeing as I want to explore several of Jools moons I've been trying to figure out the best (including coolest, not necessarily the most efficient or reasonable) way of making sure they have plenty of fuel. I've considered using landers to pick up ore from the surfaces, but the amount of extra equipment (mainly part count and space in the hanger bays I'm worried about, rather than mass) seems like it might be best to use asteroids (obviously I'd still need drills, refineries, etc, but I'd save on other parts a lander would need). Two ideas that I've thought of (and feel happy to tell me they're both terrible and there's a better way of doing it) are to either have a refinery and stuff in Dres orbit, which the carriers rendezvous at in order to refuel, or to send a separate mission in advance to Dres which grabs the asteroids and pushes them out from Dres and takes them to Jool as mobile ore sources. My main queries are simply based on trying to find out the feasibility of these ideas. Does anyone know how often a transfer window opens from Dres to Jool, how much delta-V does it take to get there, and overall how difficult is it to go from one to the other? Thankyou in advance

Are they lined up properly with the centre of mass? Otherwise all that will happen is the craft will start spinning, which the thrusters then try to compensate for (hence why they would all be firing)

How do I make a download link for it (not used to actually posting much in these forums, so a bit inexperienced)? And do you want that version or would you rather wait until I've finished (hopefully) fixing a few issues with heat etc? Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you both like it I'm hoping it'll be enough for my first attempt at getting to Jool with anything

Ok, this is something I launched recently for a video series I'm attempting to make, thought it sort of fitted here. It's entirely stock, no mods, cheats, add-ons, etc, used in anything from the design stage to getting it in to orbit. It wasn't designed for the challenge, although I think the carrier meets all of the base requirements (apologies for the SSTO's not having extendible solar arrays, but this carrier is designed to take all sorts so I could quickly design a new SSTO with them if you wanted). (never posted an album before, hopefully this works) If I remember, it supposedly had ~7km/s delta-V, space for something like 32 kerbals in the crew quarters, plus a few more in the bridge. The SSTO's had enough fuel to get to orbit from the surface of Kerbin and then do some manoeuvres, but not a huge amount. The number of craft it can carry varies depending on what you want to put in there, it's got 6 docking ports in this test version (although while making changes to fix heat issues I'm also adding another 4 to the walls of the hanger bay) including the space for ore carrying landers on the rear. I'm not too bothered about scoring points though, I'm mainly interested in seeing what you guys think of the design in terms of appearance I'm also working on a new (and better looking) version of the Astrid ( http://imgur.com/a/aGMDH#0 ), but I don't think that fits with the rules for this challenge

Yes, all fully stock The small craft in the hangers are SSTO's, the Astrid herself was launched from the VAB with the aid of several extra engines strapped on

Thankyou, I'll post any future stuff in there

Firstly, I'd like to say that while I've been playing KSP a while, this is my first time on the forums, so please tell me if I do anything wrong/post this in the wrong place. With that aside, let me get on with the post. For a long time, the kerbals have dreamed of visiting the other planets, but a rocket was deemed too old fashioned and to do it with. So, with the goal of a reusable interplanetary ship in mind, they began the Astrid project... It was my first manned mission to intentionally leave Kerbins SOI, and the rest of the story is at this link: http://imgur.com/a/aGMDH#0 Hope you enjoy it
