Is there a guide to install the open source driver?

I think i figured out how to switch to the xorg open source driver. But when i switch to it my desktop and all of my programs looks like this http://postimg.org/image/ffnpuwstt/full/ lol. If i use nomodeset it goes to the desktop normally but then i have like 2 fps in ksp.

I haven't tried that i don't think! Any chance you could explain to me how to use that? As a complete linux noob i kinda just read tutorials and troubleshooted for days to get everything up and running and now i'm here.

I have a fresh install of KSP and it basically freezes if i do anything after the game loads into the menu. I'm really desperate. when this happens i have to restart the computer because nothing responds. I am completely new to linux as i just dual booted to play ksp. I have looked through the linux thread and nothing has solved my issue. Here are my specs: Specs: GPU:R9 280x/ CPU:i5-4670k/ RAM:8gb/ OS: Ubuntu 14.04/ using fglrx proprietery driver thing/ playing at 2560x1440 resolution.
