I just figured it out. Even though I was on the correct bottom attach node, if your mouse is too high, it still highlights the engine even if it doesnt visibly reattach to the higher node. I kept my mouse at the lower end, attached everything and it fixed the problem.

I did notice that there are two attach nodes for that engine and tried both.

I can't right now as I'm at work but I had the same thought as you, so I went back into VAB and flipped the decoupler and tried it both ways with no change.

I have a LV909 engine and right below it a TR-18a decoupler. The decoupler is set at a stage below the engine. When I activate the dcoupler to remove the stage below it, the decoupler moves into the stage with the lv909 and the decoupler stays attached to the engine causing the engine to never provide thrust whats going on?
