I lost so far two parachutes that weren't deployed due to a flipping pod and they overheated quite fast, funny thing was that the pod still survived tge impact on water. Otherwise I use heatshields to protect my materials bay for example, so it's far from useless for me.

Yep, good question, maybe they decided they are useless because not all modules contribute drag but only the front ones and you can see a drag value for the whole ship somewhere?
