I was having the same issue repeatedly and this fixed it. My game would crash every time I got just below 10,000m. Turns out that is just when things started cooling again on my reentry. Thank you for finding this out and saving me a lot of time. I was about to try disabling mods and lowering texture setting to see if anything helped. I would not have suspected the overheating bars of all things.
