I use MechJeb. It taught me how to do an orbital rendezvous.
Now I use it for maneuver node editing and the slap-on-any-surface remote control.

Having a landing and an ascent stage also allows you to leave extra mass behind and thus to build a smaller return craft.

How did you test it? In orbit or on the surface? Without changing settings KER will display the orbital values and they greatly differ from the atmospheric ones.

How about getting a Lab into orbit or to Minmus to earn extra science?
