I also have the same situation, ubuntu 14.04, AMD graphics, 1.0.x runs fine as long as I don't try fullscreen. Untouched stock 1.1 insta-crashed until I deleted the unity folder in ~/.config, now it runs but no ground as described above.
Without the AMD compatibility mode option setting anti-aliasing causes insta-crash. With I can change the setting but has no effect on the problem.
Goes without saying that I am very unhappy that a game I paid a considerable amount for is completely useless out of the box, on a supported platform, after seeing weeks of evidence of pre-release testing going on. Hopefully squad will realise soon that it's not much fun to make a release only to receive a barrage of complaints and be back in the office working on hotfixes the next day.
