Have you tried completely uninstalling the whole game (i.e) the files that actually contain the fuel tanks, and reinstalling the latest version. What seemed to have happened is that I had the old textures of 1.7 fuel tanks, which confused the game, made it bug out and disappear probably thinking that it should not be possible to place things that don't exist etc.
