I'm looking at upgrading my PC to a more modern CPU/mobo setup for Linux usage (and better KSP performance )
Here's what I found for upgrades
- CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 / Ryzen 1500x (upgrade from i5 4590)
- Mobo: MSI B350M mobo (upgrade from MSI B85M-E45)
- RAM: 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM (upgrade from 2*(2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz ram)
If your main concern is KSP then the ryzen 5 1600 might be a bit of a downgrade. Your current i5 has a single core score of 2114 while the ryzen 5 1600 has a “low” score of 1828. But you can oc it but ryzen isn’t a very strong overclocker... But if you have many multithreaded workloads a ryzen 5 will do you good. But KSP is quite singlethreaded. But don’t get me wrong, ryzen is not a bad processor, I have one and it runs really nice. And if you are running an hdd a SSD will be an good upgrade!
good luck

Now when our new computers are running nicely we have gotten an issue, the router (way to old airport time capsule, around 2010) and the extender is struggling to provide Wi-Fi to the house and with the extender losing connection with most devices temporarily (it is quite strange). So now I am tasked to find a good router for our house. Our house is from from 1925 sweden so the walls are fairly thick and each floor is 128 square meters and there are three floors that need internet internet connection. So my mom went to the local store and they recommended the tp link deco m5 three pack for us. But I am not sure if it really is the best option since I have read online that the transfer speeds are mediocre when the data goes through one of the other nodes. So, do you recommend the deco m5 or any other router kit.

Maybe a fresh install of KSP would do the trick? Just backup the game fils first...

the heat sink attaches to the top of the CPU with a clip
Just dont forget to apply thermal compound between the cpu and heatsink, unless it comes pre applied.

Hmm I'm skeptical. That's a pretty good GPU, but I'm worried about the X4 (Athlon, apparently) processor. Judging by the price, not so sure it would hold up to KSP. Could be wrong about my gut feeling, but if I am, good for you!
I agree, I dont think the cpu would play KSP with ease, I played on an old mobile i5 and it has (apparently) slightly better per core performance and it still had issues.

So far my temps seem ok, except for constant spikes on the processor....
You did apply thermal paste?

Let’s hope for that.

you can buy a GTX 1080ti and it pays for itself in 120 days. then buy another and pays itself in 60 days.....and repeat this until you are rich.
Why not buy many cards at the same time?

What chipset do you have? Z, B or H. Only the “Z” chipset is overclockable...

so right now i want to kick kerbal babies
got the pc built and it took hours.....ugh....got MB in and missed a stand off.....had to start over........
put mb back in and install CPU, go to install heatsink and....nope.....need to take off clips on MB it dont fit like that so had to start over
installed the heat sink and its too big and covers the ram slot.....what....the....hell......EVO 212 problems
okay stock heatsink it is, its actually nice so not too much of loss but it doesnt look as badass.
GPU and ram go in as planned lol
i bought 3 better fans for the rear and top exhaust. unscrewing case fans will make you hate life, 2 screws stripped and had to remove them with pliers. i found a flat head screwdriver that fit in the screws better than the pillips so i ended up using that, and the rest of the fan installs went much easier.
got all the wires nice and hidden, kept as short as possible so everything looks nice and open.
steal CD drive from this pc and get windows 7 disc and then upgrade to 10
push power and hope for the best
woot it posts!
set the bios things, ram hates its stock speed and crashes...will fiddle later
okay lets boot windows.....loading........select language.....hmmmm my keyboard has stopped working.....try everything for 30min resort to google
so you wanna run windows 7 on ryzen do ya? well that aint happening the way you want it too.....why?apparently someone though it was a good idea at Asrock (motherboard) to not have legacy ps/2 support in the bios...i mean who needs that stuff anyways amirite?
so what happens is windows will boot but because ryzen isnt supported CPU and my motherboard doesnt have legacy ps/2 support the USB ports on the computer dont work so the keyboard isnt detected.......nice.
so tomorrow ill go buy a dinosaur keyboard so i can finally install windows lol
thats my excitement for tonight.
What a day! Good luck!

It will be a fairly minor update of the current generation. If it is like the last few Core i generations you can expect the same models with about 100~200MHz more. That is not really worth waiting and paying 50% extra for a temporary processor.
You arr probablybright

This should be in modded install support, since you're running MJ 2.6.0, which is for KSP 1.2.2 and incompatible with 1.3. Get MJ 2.6.1 for 1.3 here.
Did you check whole the output log? Or what?
Good job!!

What do you think about the next ryzen generation?
Maybe I could go for the ryzen 3 1200 and then wait for the next ryzen lineup. And of course upgrade then.
Would that be stupid or would it be an great idea?

That was really quick... Way quicker than I expected. Thank you so much!!

Hello you wonderful people out there, I am getting a new computer for christmas time, But I dont know where to spend all the funds...
My budget is 1100 dollars (or 10 000 swedish crowns). That includes keyboard tower and screen. I do have speakers and headphones. And also a mouse. So, no problem there. And I am ready to assemble all the parts myself. Lets cross fingers and hope for the best... NO, just kidding, I never cross my fingers, I just hope for the best
My main goal with this setup is to play kerbal space program and do some video and photo editing (go cores, GO!!). But I do want to play more graphically intense games too. Like Fallout 4, Subnautica. And they aren't the most intense games from what I know...
By the way, I am upgrading from an old macbook pro (13" 2011, 8gb ram, i5 2435m and intel hd 3000 mobile(just a recommendation if you are using an macbook pro unibody(old), open it and remove the fan blow out all dust you can see, improved my thermals greatly)).
And I am going to use lots of mods, tho not many graphics mods.
Thank you so much for your advice!

I am not a pro in computers and programming, but just an idea that I have, try a fresh install of KSP, by the way, which operating system are you using(Windows, Linux, Mac), dont know if that affects KSP but maybe it is something that doesn't work for your operating system.
The thing I would do if KSP crashed is try a fresh install(but because you have placed this thread in "ksp, PC, unmodded installs") this may not work, but try, at least!
Good luck!

I have had the same problem, but I got it to work, trial and error.
First you have to make sure that you have connected the PS3 controller to your computer before you start KSP up. Then, you can follow the video I made, the main reason I didn't describe it in words was because I wanted you to understand, as said before: "a picture is worth a thousand words" and I am not very good at describing things in english(my main language is swedish) , so hope you understand and enjoy your flights with the controller

Good Luck!

Yeah it is a really solid cpu. I just meant that his/her older processor might preform better in KSP thanks to its higher IPC. I have an r5 1600 and it is a beast in most multithreaded tasks. And as you pointed out, it definitely isn’t slow!
