man, its kind of deflating because i am trying everything i can to get DDS to play nice with OpenGl. its pretty frustrating. I may have to make a dual boot at some point and develop there too

The difficulties of having two incompatible graphics APIs... I get where you're going, the hardware should uncompress and display the DDS fine, but the API won't let you (yet) :)

  2. Hmmm... does not appear to be working so well, don't recall Kerbin being yellow and Mun being Moireed

Edited because pasting a picture apparently didn't work.here's screenshots of what I mean:

How does one get a picture into this forum anyway?

    SMALL UPDATE

    v2.0.3

    • No new textures. Just a patch that SHOULD allow OpenGl users (Mac and Linux) to use DDS textures. (testing needed, so please test!)
      YAY FOR LESS RAM USAGE!
Note: this does NOT fix issues with DX11. You can force OpenGl now on Windows.
    • Fixed case sensitive errors for Linux and Mac users.
YAY! NO MORE HANGING ON THE LOAD PAGE!

Thank you :) Mac user here, I'll give it a whirl. Also - you forgot to link it in the OP, still goes to 2.0.2

That's very inspirational and kind of you to post that.

I think the problem I'm having is I am being transparent (posting a lot of 'development' images waaay before release), which leads to people going 'Hey wait a sec - what about this?'.

The issue is I don't particularly want to suddenly turn round and say 'No. Enough.'

I think this started when I released the beta 0.1 version (It had around 5 planets, all quite buggy and what not) when I was just experimenting. Someone suggested a small asteroid moon and I added Niebietos (the small lava one). I think it was a good suggestion and probably mislead me into seeking other people's ideas more than the ones I had myself.

I'm definitely going to take your advice on board because I realise I have quite a few ideas myself. If a planet doesn't look good enough, I will remove it or rework it until it is up to 'standard' with the rest.

That being said, if nobody objects, I've decided to change Scorrud (Volcanic hazardous planet) to something different. I'd still like to adopt a volcanic appearance, but perhaps... I can't find the word at the moment.

Maybe I do try too hard to please everyone. I mean, if they don't like a planet they don't have to visit it at all!

Thanks for the reply. I'll still take suggestions but I may only accept the most impressive or unique ones and shape the planet from there.

I actually think you're striking a nice balance here, I quite like your vision thus far. You're having a good time - and achieving good results - with your planet making. Been some good collaboration in discussion also which is productive. There's something to be said for a sanity check too.. questions like "Do you guys think it's too crazy if I do this or that" are viable questions to ask. Sometimes it takes an outside view to make a project the best it can be. But as Galileo says - ultimately it's your mod and you can do whatever you like with it :)

    Don't. Trust me.

(Skip to 2:12 for the gas giant part)

BWAHAHAHAHAHA oh my goodness.. that's insane... So that's what happens when you divide by zero! I love this game.

I always hyper edit my vessels around planets to give them a bug check. Sometimes I messed something up with the PQS mods and when scaled space (the planet you see from orbit) unloads and the height map tries to load, the game freaks out and throws you very quickly away from the planet, forcing you yo restart the game after the issue is fixed.

Problem is, I was 'splashed down' at Olu'um... It doesn't even have an ocean!

Maybe an ocean of liquid hydrogen?

Every time a planet is added or removed from an install, the flight global values will change and things in the SOI of a given Kopernicus world (it can happen to stock worlds too) will move to another. These can be coded into bodies to keep them from changing and stop this from happening. This is a nightmare for anyone running a career, grand tour, or any significant sandbox mission.

I like how that magic boulder has the same color veins as Olu'um. That show-off. :P

Yeah but in my case it was no biggie :) I already got a replacement up there. It makes perfect sense as to why, and no Kerbal was harmed. Can't have lively development without some hiccups :D. It would be hilarious if my probe ended up somewhere weird just drifting around. Fortunately my missions in LKO, on Mun and Minmus are unaffected. Anyone with a lot at stake would likely not be using mods that aren't set in stone, I would imagine.

I really do like this update, it's stunning to look at :D

  7. Just loaded up the new version, looks lovely, the new additions are great! Thanks also for tidying up the orbits and the physical parameters make much more sense now. Olu'um's accretion disc looks great! Thela is gloomy (in the best way). Only issue I had was my probe orbiting Olei has ... vanished from existence XD. No worries, I'll just send another one. Great work, thank you again.

Addition - Telos and Volux might need a check on their physical parameters as well.. and I replaced the probe in orbit of Olei :) a perpendicular inclination was a neat idea

Lore (kinda want to keep this a running thing. Someone suggested this on another game forum):

I can't format it in mobile very well, so this will be a.... Prototype?

    OLU'UM

       RELATIVE MASS -> 3.14G

       CLASS -> Supermassive Gas Giant

       PARENT CELESTIAL BODY -> Kerbal

    Description:

       Formation (3.2Bn Kerbin-Years ago)

          - A huge coronal mass ejection (CME) from Kerbal cooled off and began to spin in the young star's accretion disk. This spinning generated a huge amount of friction inside of what's now called Olu'um. This clumped, rotating mass attracted even more matter - a variety of gases. Hydrogen, helium... Other solid planetoids such as comets... As the comets burnt up in the gas sphere, they melted, bringing water and eventually oxygen to Olu'um's air.

But Olu'um didn't stop there. A young, rocky planet was brutally dragged into the upper layers of Olu'um, barraged by rocks and air resistance. Making it out alive, the poor planet had depleted 80% of its original mass. However its sacrifice was not in vain, for oxygen and hydrogen condensed and reacted on its surface into oceans. Sonus was born.

       Present day (00:00:00)

         - Olu'um is a supermassive, gaseous giant. Not too dissimilar to Eve's colouring, this purple monstrosity is sub-nuclear. This means it's nearly hot enough to spontaneously combust. If, or when, it does, the light given off will be brighter than Kerbol itself. Olu'um's vivid purple colouring is because of fluorescent materials in its atmosphere. They react with the oxygen and produce an awe-inspiring glow.

          - Olu'um's accretion disk is a beauty from afar and orbit. It spins alongside its own gaseous... Guardian? Or destroyer...

       Mission(s) to Olu'um:

          - Veronica - Class FT Ship. SSTO.

             - Veronica set off towards Olu'mium (alluminum haha) skies in 7242 A.D. Unfortunately, after landing on Volux, it was unable to complete the atmospheric entry of Telos, where it burned up. 2 escape pods ejected before the vessel's ultimate demise. Perhaps... They're still alive?

Olu'um's Predicted Date of Death (PDoF): 18242 A.D (10242 Kerbin years from now). Reason: Instantaneous atmospheric and core combustion leading to an exhaustion of fuel lasting mere hours. Resulting core will be solid lead, and over 10x the giant's current mass.

    ------

So what do you think? The science behind the lore might not be 100% true, but I've tried my best. Should I do more of these 'lore fact files'?

I won't add the black hole, don't worry!

KSP planets are 'on rails'. They don't interact with one another even if directly next to each other. This stops random orbit fluctuations and improves performance. That's why you can't push Gilly no matter how hard you tried!

Ah cool! I wasn't sure if that was a thing or not. Lets the stellar neighbourhood be more interesting for sure. Thank you again, can't wait to try the new version

Sure! nice to have stories to go with your planets

  10. Congratulations on what looks like another awesome release, downloading now. The accretion disk around Olu'um looks enticing ...

I would definitely say please do not add a black hole into the Kerbol system... the gravitational disruptions would destroy the system lessening the immersive awesome, and not to mention destroying or ejecting planets (not sure if that is a thing in KSP?). You may want to try messing around in a  program like Universe Sandbox to try out how the orbital dynamics would behave over time to watch for potential orbit shifts or collisions/ejections in general.

  11. Hello Gamel0rd1, I have to say, I love this mod. It totally enriches the Kerbol system and it looks stunningly beautiful, particularly with EVE. So exciting to explore.

I have a couple of questions though (and pardon if they've already been asked/answered)

    - It seems Neibos' orbit intersects Duna's at the same inclination... um collision risk? Given enough orbits they might just smack into each other or get caught in each other's SOI.

    - Neibos, and a couple of the other atmospheric worlds are said to have breathable atmospheres, but at ~0.06atm and 13.7K surface temperatures... that's not too breathable or possible for liquid water, are the physical parameters for them due to be updated later to more realistic values? It's interesting to see that Neibos will orbit well into the habitable butter zone of the Kerbol system and then stray outward... that would make for some harsh winters methinks.
