How about a drop pod challenge? You need to bring at least one kerbal from a low Kerbin orbit back to the surface, but without any parachutes. You may use airbrakes to slow your descent, and a single stage of solid fuel rockets (for example, Sepratrons) right before impact. But spaceplanes do not qualify.
