  1. This final stage was normally designed to get back to kerbin surface starting from the mun. I have used this before and i know that my kerbal does not burn up when comming from the mun. So i'm sure i can land this as long as i can slow down enough to get any orbit around kerbin. I will try the multiple flyby technique, thanks :)
  2. Ok, SO. I'm in quite a pickle. I challenged myself to get from low kerbin orbit to duna and back using a craft below 1 ton. It went pretty good so far. I've already landed and taken off from duna and this is my situation now. I have 554 delta v left. I know this is just under what i would need to get to kerbin so i went eva with jeb and pushed with his eva pack to save enough delta v so i could get a kerbin encounter with 30 delta v to spare. The problem is that i can't aerobrake hard enough because jeb would explode (i did not use a heatshield because that would be too heavy). Luckily the fuel tank functions as a very weak heatshield for jeb. After lots and lots of trial and error i managed to use the mun to slow myself down before aerobraking in kerbin, with this move I could still only dip down to 65 000m without burning jeb to a crisp. This was still not enough to get into a stable orbit. All i need is to get into an eliptical orbit and from there i can handle it. Any tips i could use to manage this? The situation i'm showing below is just when i got into duna orbit, i have not done eva with jeb yet. I think all the info needed is on the sceenshot. I dont want to give my save because i do not want an exact step by step guide on how to do it. I just want some handy tips Thx in advance
  3. No, BUT. You can estimate it using the following mod and the following delta v map: You can download the mod named "kerbal engineer" It's a VERY useful mod, i can't live without it anymore. Basically it calculates your delta v (and many other parameters) You will need to know the delta v that your 3 stages have combined. Apart from that you will need to use a "ksp delta v map" such as this one: As you see on that map you will need approx 3400 delta v to get to low kerbin orbit (70 000m) So if you create a craft with a certain payload and your 3 launch stages have a combined delta v of 3400 you should be able to get to a 70 000m orbit with that mass. -To know the height of your orbit, you can estimate that using the delta v map again. As you can see you need around 800 delta v to get from low kerbin orbit to the mun (this means your apoapsis will be the height of the munar orbit) double that (I think) to get your craft in a circular orbit that is as high as the munar orbit (=1600 delta v) So 800 delta v for example will get your orbit halfway to munar orbit IN TERMS OF DELTA V, in absolute terms this will be much lower because your height above kerbin will increase exponentailly. So let's show an example: let's say your payload is 20 tons and the total delta v of your 3 other stages is 4400. This means you will use 3600 delta v to get to klo (low kerbin orbit) with 1000 delta v to spare to raise your orbit. using 500 for apoapsis raising and 500 for periapsis raising. I would estimate that your orbit would be around halfway to the mun. Hope this is clear enough and useful enough.
  4. I did this before and had no problem aerobraking in duna's orbit without overheating problems. I did not even need a second pass. I did not use heat shields but do note that my craft was very light.
  5. So I am trying to get to duna with as little delta v usage as possible. Is there an efficiënt and doable way to use gravity assists to get to duna? I know of the oberth effect (sorry if I misspelled it). I just need to know how i can do an efficiënt gravity assist to duna. thx Edit: thanks for the comments so far. But to clarify, I do not want to refuel. An idea: would it in theory be possible to get myself in a 10% slower orbit than kerbin and then use a kerbin gravity assist. And would this even be feasable .
