I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but I forgot. On a whim, I once launched KSP 32bit and didn't have this problem. Are there any downsides to the 32bit version?

In the processes tab KSP is using ~550MB. In the performance tab, it says ~3MB are in use. If RAM were the problem, wouldn't the game be having problems during gameplay, rather than on start-up/close? as for getting more memory, I don't have the resources to upgrade my rig; so I may just have to put KSP down for a while.

I'm on Windows 10 Home version 1803 with a 2.5GHz Intel i3-3120M CPU and 4GB of RAM.

Title says it, but I mean when kerbin appears along with the 3 floating kerbals and the menu options. It also happens when I quit to main menu (to a lesser extent). Also, when I quit the game it freezes and sometimes almost crashes.
