So I had the same problem. My screen freezes and then it turns black and then I return to the desktop with a little error window with a kerbal on it. The error in that window was Unity 2019.2.2f1_ab112815d860. I tried various things and nothing worked. I also contacted the support so I'm curious for their answer. Then I installed an older version of my graphics card driver (I've got a Radeon RX590) that was released in December last year. And until now the game didn't crash anymore. But I'm gonna test it a few more times to be completely sure. It seems that Radeon gpus and the latest Radeon drivers have some issue with KSP, but I'm no expert. But it would explain why (at least in my case) the game crashed regardless of the graphics settings or if it's stock or modded or at the beginning of the game or in the middle of it. I can't say that this way of solving the issue works with Nvidia gpus too, since I don't have any.
