  1. I honestly try to keep part clipping to a minimum. All parts must be (largely) visible and cannot be completely enveloped by others. It would feel like cheating if I were to design a cool looking craft and just cram it full with parts on the inside to make it work. You get more interesting designs that way anyway. Form follows function. Sorry, I forgot to mention that you'll need to set the Mk2 command pod at the tail as the control point. The default point is the Mk3 command pod in front but this one is mounted upside down for aesthetic reasons. (And to create a hatch) Thank you! I love creating these. And yeah the part efficient crafts is another self imposed constrained but that more has to do with the fact that I am playing the game on a very old laptop. Crafts with more than 200 parts are really starting to cause lag already.
  2. Hello, In my humble opinion, Spaceplane SSTOs are generally a bit boring. I find their (aerodynamic) requirements generally to be a bit too strict to come up with an interesting design. As can be seen in my KerbalX hangars I much prefer in-space or rocket-SSTO spacecraft. Nevertheless I wanted to give a normal, airbreathing, horizontal take-off, spaceplane a try. I think the use of the Mk3 command pod as an under slung spaceplane cockpit has a lot of potential. The Nefelibata-class can be used to transport a handful of Kerbals or a small satellite to LKO. Despite the bulky shape and the limited control surfaces the craft is actually really stable and easy to fly on both ascent and re-entry. To get it into orbit just take off normally and set the nose to a pitch angle of about 10 degrees and punch it. I highly recommend to give this craft a try if you want to give one of my creations a try. More images: Features: Enough dV to go to LKO and back with ca. 500 m/s left Rapier engines (Parachute) airbrakes Small cargo bay to carry a small payload, it also contains the (retractable) solar arrays Space for up to 4 crew Download: A craft file can be downloaded here on my KerbalX page. As with all my craft the Nefelibata-class is fully stock (+DLC).
  3. Late reply but the drive is actually quite stable once you tune it right. In it's current form I haven't had any weird explosions or other kraken effects show up. The infinite propellant is required as the firework canisters have a max of 32 shots which isn't enough to give a ship this big any meaningful deltaV. Here's a little clip of the drive in action: https://i.imgur.com/WLaeAGE.mp4
  4. Hello, After watching the latest videos by VAOS where he shows of an exploit in the new fireworks added to the 1.12 update that enables us to make an Orion drive in-game without mods I was very excited and wanted to try it out for myself. For those who don’t know about the Orion drive (Who doesn't?). It’s basically an insane idea from the 50s about propelling a (huge) spacecraft by detonating (small) nuclear bombs and riding the resulting shock wave on huge shock dampeners. Well I like big crafts so that would fit right in with the ASE line up. I recommend watching the aforementioned VAOS video if you want to know how to do this exploit. It is rather finicky, so it can be a bit tricky to find the right balance between just spilling some of Jeb’s coffee and vaporising the entire spacecraft. I recommend first building the craft and tune the “drive” afterwards. That being said, once you find that right balance it’s as reliable as any in-game engine. Here's a video of it in action. The Sehnsucht-class is meant as an in-space transport but it actually works in-atmosphere too. The lag from the fireworks is however so extreme that the game basically becomes unplayable after five or so detonations. The craft is basically taunting the Kraken by it's very existence after all so it's not surprising that some strange behavior is observed. (Another weird thing is that the (conventional) engine noise does not die down if you press X) More images: Features: dV is a meaningless concept for this craft as infinite propellant (fireworks) is required for it to work. TWR to get you on an escape trajectory out of the Kerbol system within minutes. Conventional engines for if you don’t want to blow up the other craft in a docking maneuver. Small cargo bay to dock a small shuttle craft (seen in the GIF above) Two counter rotating gravity wheels Space for up to 26 crew Total disregard for any nuclear test ban treaties Download: A craft file can be downloaded here on my KerbalX page. As with all my crafts the Sehnsucht-class is fully stock (+DLC). Note: this craft requires infinite propellant (infinite electricity optional) to work properly.
  5. Hide your kids, hide your wife. Arbour Space Enterprises has co-opted the Orion/Fireworks/Kraken drive ... This thing is ridiculous I love it so much. Video of it in action:
  6. So people kept comparing my spacecraft to fictional submarine vessels (cough... subnautica... cough). The next step was inevitable I think. Introducing the first terrestrial vehicle department of ASE (my fictional spacecraft company ). It is the first KSP submarine I build and I had a lot to learn. Turboprops don't work under water sadly and getting the balance between control and stability is very tricky. It helped to stop thinking of it as a sub but instead as an inverted zeppelin. The craft is still a work in progress but it maneuvers really well (for a sub) already. I hope to share the craft soon. Thinking of perhaps recording a cinematic of a mission I'm planning for it. Not sure yet whether I'll take it to Eve or Laythe though.
  7. Hello, Though I've previously shared crafts on Reddit and KerbalX this is the first craft I wanted to show off on the forums. I really like to make scifi looking space crafts with just the stock (+DLC) parts. This is my latest creation, the ASE Heimwee-class heavy SSTO. Here's some more pictures of a demonstration mission to Ike I just finished: More images: Features: Enough dV to get into orbit and land on Minmus or the Mun for refuelling. After a refuel it has enough dV to go pretty much anywhere. (destinations are TWR limited) On-board ore drill and processing equipment enabling this Retractable engine pods “Flipping” engines that help taking off without launch clamps Parachutes for keeping the craft aligned during landing. (Have not actually tried to land the craft back on Kerbin yet) Space for up to 9 crew, including 2 science labs Download: A craft file can be downloaded here. As with all my crafts, the Heimwee is fully stock (+DLC).
  8. Excellent help! I thought I could dismiss that solution from the other graphics bug as I already dealt with the big black terrain glitches by turning off "celestial bodies cast self-shadows" but editing the settings.cfg file like that indeed solved the problem. Strange that isn't the default setting. Thank you.
  9. Had not checked back in this thread but thanks for the kind words of welcome!
  10. Hello, I'm having this issue where the shadows generated by my craft are flickering. (So likely a separate issue from the big black terrain shadow glitches that have been reported elsewhere lately). It's really quite annoying. Here's a short GIF I recorded of the issue: https://imgur.com/a/K8Ub0lQ I have just upgraded my graphics card so that might be a factor but I am hoping it's not the root cause and it can be fixed with a setting of either the game or graphics which I'm not aware of. Is there any advise you could give me here? Thanks in advance!
  11. Thanks. I will once I add a new vessel to the collection.
  12. Hello everyone! I've been posting stuff on KerbalX and Reddit for a while and thought I'd hop in here as well. I bought the game before the steam edition arrived so I cannot check but my hours played probably reach embarrassingly deep into the 4 digits at this point. I primarily like to design and build in-space spaceships where I like to find a nice balance between looks and in-game functionality. Below an image of my favorite craft to date. No idea what the forums will bring, but excited to join and find out! - CSX6400
