Wanted to fly to mun as effective as possible. Two Kerbins, one down on the surface, one in the mother ship and back home.
Did a few tests before the final takeoff mostly with the lower stages to get into Kerbins orbit effectively.
Picture story:
There was not much training and I could not test each part separately so I did a good guess and gave it a try.
Only thing I tested in advance was docking. And it was not working. This is why Jebediah needs to sit in the back vessel and no docking maneuvers will be performed.
First stage basically only boosters to get best Isp from Main Sail Engine.
Boosters thrown off and first tilt angle to come into orbit. So this is kind of second stage.
Third stage to bring vessel into an stable orbit around Kerbin.
Fourth stage to escape Kerbin orbit and travel to the Mun.
Arrived at the Mun and established an orbit ab about 110 km.
Thrown away fourth stage. Jebediah is sitting in the back landing vessel already as docking did not work on first test (ships exploded).
There goes the landing vessel with Jebediah.
Added maneuver node to touch down in the big crater.
Burn was finished and approach to surface in progress.
13k meters left... fuel should be good to go back to orbit if I do not waste too much...
And Jeb made it! over 1000 m/s delte V left... this should work to go back to orbit and rendezvous the ship home.
Plant a flag and have some fun on the surface.
come back to orbit was a pain... bugs glitches and lags but finally I managed to come into and orbit that is somehow close to the target orbit at 125k m.
But the orbit was not shown and I was not able to do maneuver nodes or anything.
I was still able to control both vessels but sometimes a glitch caused the vessel to lose all velocity and fall back to the Mun surface.
After 2 hours of loading and try to eyeball the target as good as possible I endet up being about 50 km away from my mother ship...
Beeing over 50 km away I tried to manage to come back to the mother ship manually... meanwhile the left fuel and stage display was gone.
Maybe this glitch saved my life... I do not know if fuel would have been enough to come as close as I did.
10 km left... 100 m/s to burn for zero delta V to the target. I guess even without the glitch I would have managed to come back.
A rough approximation:
- was back to orbit with 436 m/s left
- need to burn about 80 m/s retrograde for 0 delta V -> 300 m/s left
- burned about 100 m/s to the target. 200 m/s left.
- burned about 100 m/s against the target. 100 m/s left.
Now Jebediah became the ultimate hero and jumped off his moon lander to travel the last meters back to the mother ship via his Jetpack.
And after he pooed his pants to the max he finally arrived back at Tims vessel. The 800 m/s delta V left should be more than good to come back to Kerbin!
About 150 m/s taken to change orbits.
Another 200 m/s to intersect with Kerbins atmosphere to get rid of the tons of delta V :-)
436 m/s left... we do not need this any longer...
Say goodbye to the last fuel, fastend seat belts and hold on tight.
Approach back to Kerbin atmosphere.
No nice glowing re-entry tail :-( ... but last delta Vs burned now into the atmosphere.
Drogue-chute and parachute open for a safe nice landing back to the surface :-D
Welcome back to Kerbin my brave little Kerbals.
Don´t know what the numbers want to tell me but nothing is correct here.
It took me about 2.5 hours from takeoff to touchdown.
Playtime in total. Time includes aprox. 1 hour dinner :-).
So about 7 hours to manage the mission including tests and building time.
