Reach for orbit with an ion glider!
fireblade42 replied to zarakon's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Been trying an RTG powered one for a while now. This is the best I've done. Only the back four wings have their control surfaces active. I think making it with 2 IONs per stage might work out better. Score = 1299.6 -
BSC: Kerbal X - We have a winner!
fireblade42 replied to Xeldrak's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
From the Kerbal X's description of being on of the most successful rockets, I put together my most successful lifter designs with a very Mun capable payload. It also had the ability to scale to the payload by changing the number of outer tank stacks. I usually follow a launch profile that I got from one of Scott Manley's videos, keep it <200m/s while under 10km then full throttle at orbit prograde until apoapsis is ~100km then coast up and circularize. in the VAB diagram of the major parts of this setup Album of it on a mission to the Mun Craft file -
BSC: Albatross 3 - And the winner is...

I'm going to enter my Vulcan V. The air intakes are clipped without using the debug menu. It can make a trip around the world up at about 30km. It has a nice wide tricycle landing gear for random ground landing. I have stalled it out and it quickly recovered. Otherwise flight is stable even when the center fuel tanks are mostly empty. That rule applies to ejected stages that don\'t have a capsule and return to kerbin. What ever is left with the capsule must land intact using the game\'s physics. The rule is so don doesn\'t have to watch every piece of the craft. Plus i think debris get deleted in the atmosphere if they\'re far from the ship.

I\'m putting in 2000 this turn.

Does this mean we only need to get the parts into the orbit, or have some fuel left to do a rendezvous, or actually do a rendezvous once we have a target? This might change later lifter designs if it is the last one.

I tried it again and shaved some time off to be 24:52. Same plane, most of the change was in the take-off. Instead of doing a large upward spiral to make the turn, I just pitched it straight over to 270. Still ran out of fuel at about 22:45, but didn\'t need to glide nearly as long. Mostly needed to drop down from 14km into the valley. Runway and drop off Landed and log flight album, but its just those 4 pics

Fuel efficient low atmosphere flight to KSC 2.
fireblade42 replied to Vostok's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I did this with 550kg of fuel. It\'s not as impressive as JellyCubes\', but it only took about 27 minutes. I also ran out of fuel about 5 minutes till landing. Used a FL-T250 and 2 Mk2. Flight Screens takeoff eep no fuel packages bounce right
