  1. Not sure I can help with your specific problem, but you can do a crew report in orbit to tell you what biome you're over. So, if you're orbiting Minmus and you see you're over the Greater Flats, you can tell the Great Flats are to the west, there are some highlands to the east, etc.
  2. Well, there is a time frame here. As an example, you can choose to transmit science back from Laythe, or wait for an appropriate window to launch it back to Kerbin. However, if you are counting on that science it will make it harder for you to hit your other launch windows. EDIT: This was in response to a question asking, "Why wouldn't I always bring my science back?"
  3. God-Queen Ewallen, Ruler of star and seas, master of all she surveys, has made another (unreasonable) command! Her worsening madness has compelled her to demand that you colonize all bodies of the sun, and do so within 1 year's time! She made sure to mention that she wanted to make sure her colonists were "strong, vital, and had enough room for activities". You didn't have the heart to tell her you've never launched a rocket before, but you know the price of failing the God-Queen! Challenge: Within 1 game year (426 kerbin days), put a Hitchhiker storage container on all non-gaseous bodies in the Kerbol system. Winners will be determined by: 1) The fewest amount of days 2) The most bodies that have a storage container on them by the end of the year (if no one has been able to colonize all the bodies within the timeframe) Constraints: 1) You must start a new career. 2) Stock parts only. 3) No mods that affect the game system itself. Kerbal engineer, Mechjeb are OK. Additionally, "AGM (Action Group Monitor) Editor Extensions which allows slightly more freedom (especially in degrees of symmetry), or any graphical mod such as Universe Replacer or Hot Rockets, Cloud stuff, etc. as long as it doesn't add parts or change physics. 4) No cheats, obviously (debug menu, etc.) 5) The storage containers need to be powered and full of (alive!) Kerbins. Additional, Jeb-level bonus points: "I'm not made of money!" Only one vessel can be sent to each orbital body. You will need to send a ship with 2 hitchhiker storage containers to Eve, 2 to Duna, and 5 to Jool. Completion of this fiscally responsible challenge will net you 50 days off your final score. Remember, these are colonists- they don't have to come home! That said, you will probably have to figure out how to balance your science gains with making sure your colonists are comfortable. Have fun! Leaderboard: 1: 2: 3: 4: 5:
  4. Hello fellow Kerbonauts, As our budding space program grows, we will need to increase the precision of our landings. So far, we have used the Kerbal Space Center as a target, but that is not enough. Challenge: Take off, complete 1 full orbit, and then land on the Island of Kersica, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of the KSC. Reasoning: While landing near the KSC requires precision timing, it does not require changing your orientation; you simply head east until you circle around. Landing someplace off the main axes should add a degree of difficulty. Additionally, the Island of Kersica is quite small, relatively flat and surrounded by water so if you miss your brave Kerbonauts should survive for another mission. Rules: Stock parts only for now. They should be more than sufficient for this challenge, it is more about precision piloting than the ship itself. Have at it!
  5. If I'm understanding your question correctly, you can in the current version. If I have 3 stages, 1 being liquid tanks & engine, 2 being decouplers, and 3 being SRBs, if I move just the engine icons down to stage 3, the engine will light along with the SRBs. Once they run out, you can decouple them (stage 2), and the ship will proceed with the remaining fuel left in stage 1. -DrZ
  6. I've been experimenting trying a single-stage orbiter. After several iterations, Sparrow IV was successful! Parachute Command Decoupler Fuel Fuel Fuel Fuel Tridecoupler Fuel (x3) Fuel (x3) Engine (x3) Currently in a mediocre Orbit ~60k with about 1/4th left in the 3 bottom tanks (more than enough to attempt a landing). It is tough to get going without those solid burners, and steering this thing is a bear because of the torque (as Zapp Brannigan would say, ' Ah, she's built like a steakhouse but she handles like a bistro!')
