Developing countries are going up into space for the prestige bonus. Developed countries have no need for prestige. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing, letting some non-Westerners go up into space is much more diverse than just Russians and Americans.

In my slavic language 'vselena' means universe, cosmos, world. In Russian, it is an emphatic for 'moon' (like English 'luna'). So yes you are correct.

I took this photo back when the shuttle was first blasting off... sad that it's already over http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/5899/imgp0125u.jpg I was on a flight to Nassau in the Bahamas when we all saw this incredible sight from the window. It was beautiful and a great many of us were so impressed to see this once in a lifetime occurrence... some people even got a bit teary :'(
